Nurses denied me fluids

Went to my arranged meeting re-complaints from my stay in Wrexham Maelor hospital and things went well and had some positive results.

1. My wife was with me and three personnel from the Health Board were present - Head of Nursing, Patient Experience Officer and the Senior Sister from the Ward I made a complaint against.

2. They accepted fact that I did not receive any drinks usually provided by staff (tea, coffee, jug of water etc.) after 0815 and Senior Ward Sister genuinely expressed her apologies for this and said the issue had really upset her.

3. I gave them what my thoughts were that made the Health Care staff take it upon themselves not to supply me with any fluids and that reason was that one member of the Health Care staff took umbrage because I spoke a sentence in Welsh in reply to her question “do you speak Welsh?” and turned this into a racially motivated issue.
The members of the Health Board would not accept this. However much I attempted to convince them they would not accept. My reasons for this I told them was that as soon as I spoke the sentence in Welsh the ‘guilty’ one as I saw her, prompted the other one to leave the room at which they both went.

4. I was assured by the Ward Senior Sister that she has arranged that Health Care and Nursing staff check every patient to ensure that each one has access to fluids.

All in all I am satisfied with that outcome but still a little upset concerning 3 above.

Understandably, you're still a little bit upset, but it is a result of sorts. Might make things easier for other patients at the hospital.
 
This post made me sad to hear anyone feel discriminated due to race.
I honestly never thought anyone could have a problem with Welsh people.
Your post shocked me when I read you felt due to race.
I was expecting ageism or the fact youre diabetic.

I need to get to Wales more.

I know some people who feel uneasy about anyone speaking to them in a language which is obvious not familiar to them. It makes them suspicious.
It stops being a conversation. Don't you think?
I hope you can see it from their point of view too.

By the way no excuse for no liquids to a patient who cannot get their own... Ever.
I'm glad they realised their error.
I hear most hospitals have had an overload of patients with contagious illnesses this winter, like last.
I guess proof that the nhs is struggling.

My last observation to your post detail is did everyone else get a jug of water? If so. Why not you? We're you singled out? Only because they didn't feel comfortable to hear your foreign language and no ability of a true conversation?

Or are you like me?
A huge chatterbox when your sugar is higher. So no time to enjoy your humour and friendliness.
I hope the latter.
NHS nurses now aren't the same nursing conversationists or have the time they once did, in the 70s. I know because like you i had hospital inpatient experience then started training as a nurse but politics killed the job off, for me.
I observe now and they are thin on the ground nor have time for nursing like in the 70s. Shame they couldn't bring more care assistances back like in the late 80s.

So how can it be racism to OP? The English speaking nurses are speaking the foreign language then, not OP.
I don't get it as I see everyone the same. Human.

There is no way she could have known I was diabetic. Ageism? - I don't think it could have been due to my being 71 as she could no doubt see this on entering the room and at that time appeared to be no problems against talking to me. As lucylocket61 says this happened in a hospital in Wales under NHS Wales so Welsh is not a foreign language, it is the first official language of Wales. Did you know that Welsh is also one of Argentina's official languages spoken mainly by the people of the Chubut region?
Every other patient did receive a jug of water as I understand but I was in Room 2 and there are 7 rooms in total to each Ward. According to the Senior Sister at the meeting it appeared every other patient did receive their Jug of water and tea and coffee as required. She was genuinely upset which I accept but that doesn't alter the facts of the day in question.

Thanks for your support and explaining to ickihun that Welsh is not a foreign language in Wales! I think it was probably a genuine error. Cheers any way and take care.
 
I’ve seen English people castigating people several times for speaking Welsh in Wales.

One example, I was climbing Snowdon on a charity thing in 2016, and a lovely Welsh family were just in front of us, chatting away merrily in Welsh. There were two women with south east England accents sitting taking a rest on a rock said very loudly as we passed that “everyone should speak English when they are here in England”and muttering about immigrants - I took great pleasure in pointing out to them that the family were speaking Welsh. Up a Welsh mountain. In Wales.

It happens a lot.
 
Glad the ward sister took it seriously. Hope no one else suffers.
