Someone posted about steel cut oatmeal was less carb than ordinary oatmeal Ifound it on internet but it is expensive to buy due to postage.My friendly health shop owner had not heard of steel cut but offered to see if he could find it for me.Some firms do a coarse oatmeal which looks like it may be similar . What is the carb of steel cut please so that I can compare.Thanks for a great forum it has been a great help I know I would never have got my BGS down without your advice. CAROL
 
Oatmeal is oatmeal, however it is cut, and if one type raises your BG levels so will any other. My family always use the traditional pinhead oatmeal which is cut and not rolled and it has the same effect on my blood as any other one except the very processed 1 minute microwave type which (apart from being revolting) has more carbs than any other and sends BG levels into orbit. :shock:

The best advice, as ever, is to eat to your meter, so test and see.
 
Oat is processed in different ways, as Synonym says pin head oats are steel cut.
Those types that are less processed and include all the fibre will normally have lower glycemic indices.

Incidently the lowest gi and gl porridge I found on the giindex database was Sainsburys jumbo rolled oats made with semi-skimmed milk which had a gi of 40. and gl of 9 (not many UK brands have been 'officially' tested, but unsurprisingly those made traditionally with water have a higher gi) The highest was an unnamed brand of instant oat cereal made with water with a gi of 83.
