Odd results. I don't understand

I have been feeling sluggish for awhile now and I have a history of diabetes in my family, so I purchased a meter yesterday. I understand that 60-90 days is a more accurate way to test yourself but just need a question answered.

Tested myself for the first time in the afternoon yesterday (2 hours after meal) and it came in at 116. I do a low carb diet with very little use of splenda. The only sweet thing I ate since my last test was sugar free jello. Other than that, I had a turkey filet wrapped in bacon around 8pm.

I tested this morning after fasting for 10 hours around 630am and my reading was 113. I then continued to fast for 2 more hours and my reading is now 131??!!! How does that make any sense? I wanted to try and use this 12 hour fast reading and compare it to my reading after consuming Splenda but the higher reading threw me off. Does your blood sugar go up after waking up even if you don't eat/drink anything?

Thanks for your help

Its called the Dawn phenomenon. I don't understand your readings tho. I have a meter that does it in mmol. Are you in the UK?

It is quite common for diabetics to see high morning, or fasting bg. This test is a favourite of the medical community and if this gives high readings, that is above 7 in European money and something like 126 in the US and other places it is reckoned diabetic, needs to repeated though.

The thing with high and rising bg in the morning has to do with the dawn phenomenon and is part of a lot of hormones and stuff making you ready for the day. Only for us bg can go too high.

Your readings seem sort of borderline. Have you ever had a HbA1c test?

Sorry, U.S. Should have said that. My readings are in mg/dL

One thing that I completely didn't think about.... I had a pretty bad case of post nasal drip and mucus in the lungs. Doc gave me prednisone and Flonase which I (of course) took late last night. Willing to bet that skewed the readings. Thankfully, I am over it and yesterday was my last dose. Hopefully I will get more accurate readings in a few days.

Thanks guys!

Cortisone does nasty things to bg so not surprising you had a high reading today.

Hope you get low and perfectly normal readings now.
