ogtt

hi all
I had been to the doctors to say i had been feeling unwell. I also mentioned that as my dad is diabetic i did a fasting finger prick test which was 7.0mmol. She said to have another one done, this time it was 6.4mmol. Now she has suggested a glucose tolerance test. I did actually do this with a bottle of lucozade and it was 9.0mmol. (high i think) My question is what is the ogtt like? and why did the doctor not just get an hba1c done?

Many thanks

Pretty much yes. How your result relates to the OGTT depends on a) what flavour of Lucozade you used (only Original uses glucose syrup rather than HFCS, and the OGTT is done with glucose rather than a glucose-fructose mix), b) how much Lucozade you had (330ml bottle? 1l bottle? The OGTT uses 75g of glucose) and c) when you measured your BG (2h results < 7.8 mmol/l are normal, >11.1 mmol/l are diagnostic of diabetes).
and why did the doctor not just get an hba1c done?
Well, your fasting readings are prediabetic bordering diabetic. The HbA1c is not very useful in that range - that is to say, a result > 6.5% is sufficient to diagnose diabetes but results < 6.5% don't exclude it.

Ok that makes sense. It was normal lucozade and normal size. Yes tested after 2 hours but i didn't know about glucose and fructose. I have heard the ogtt is horible. How does it work? What if the results are <7.8 is that non diabetic? Why is it needed?

Sorry for all the questions :-)
