I just got a heck of a shock, as I've been feeling a bit stressed as my mobility scooter has been faulting and I didn't want to be stranded when I went to the hospital today, plus I had fish & chips from chippy today for lunch with bread, this evening I had a portion of dopiasa chicken curry done in the microwave followedby ice cream, which I know are all not good for me, but I've just done my one test today and it was a staggering 13.1, so I'm going to do another check in 2hours, but now I don't know whether I can have a drink or not but will have to as I'm really thirsty. Blimey I nearly fell off the computer chair

Oh dear Johnny,

bad news about the sugars! But then fish and chips and a sugar laden curry and ice cream would do that...

Hope your scooter stops playing up since this kind of eating won't do you much good. Chin up and have a glass of red wine, that may help a bit with the sugars...

I know my sugars total is a spike which shocked me to say the least, but hopefully it will come down, and it's made me start thinking properly about what I'm eating as I don't want to be doing serious damage for the future, but if I happened to have a serious spike again, at what level should I seek medical help. Don't get me wrong its shook me up so it'll be coming down not going up but forewarned is forarmed as they say. Does it really matter about having a drink within a 2 hrs spell if I'm going to do a sugar check as this does really confuse me on whether I can or not?? thanks saz1, unfortunately got no wine in the house, Red wine always reminds me of what I put on my chips lol vinegar.

Spike of 13 doesn't need medical attention unless you start feeling really unwell with it. My blood sugars were 16 and over at diagnosis and I was carrying on with normal life. Feeling tired and fatigued but nothing scary. But any spike over 7 can contribute to future problems so it is worth tackling them asap. If you are a type 2 then it's by choosing foods that don't make you spike over 7 whatever it may be. I removed all pasta, rice, bread and potatoes at first and got my sugars down fast and now little by little am reintroducing some low carb pasta and bread back into my eating plan. So far so good...

Oh that's ok then. I don't feel unwell or anything except for a bit 'taken aback' when I saw the result, and a hot sweat for a couple of minutes. I usually like my potatoes, bread, cheese, milk, cereals, I don't use sugar or salt; I use losalt and asda version of canderel instead. I'm going to have to really have to sit down and read some stuff to see what is acceptable for getting back to my 3-4 which is what I was when diagnosed last May.
Cheers,
John

That's not a bad idea, have good read here and look at the provided links and you will be able to decide what suits you! I chose reducing my carbs since I am a carbholic and find it difficult to be reasonable with portion sizes and really don't want to risk my future since I'm only 34. It's all about retraining your mind and I'm really enjoying my peppered steak with cream sauce and steamed veg...

Wow it's starting to come down. Not by much but at least it's started; I've just done another one but had to do it twice, as the strip seemed to be damaged first time so repeated it with a new strip. First time it said 10.0, but after putting new strip in it said 11.2, so its still a decrease but the damaged strip couldn't have been a true reading I suppose, so I'm counting it as 11.2 anyway, and now off to bed to trying and relax. God my muscles feel like concrete i'm that unrelaxed after getting such a high reading, so I'll have to do some deep breathing and hope I can sleep. Fingers crossed it will have dropped considerably by 9ish. I wonder if having my simvastatin last night would have helped it drop? I don't know though for sure.
Cheers, & good night folks
John

Relaxation is very important so deep breathing is good. The sugars are also coming down so that's good too. You have made a sound decision and given a bit of time, I'm sure you will get those low numbers again. It's very unfortunate that us diabetics can't just eat anything anytime so getting used to this is important. At first it can be a pain in the a**e to have to think all the time but you'll get used to it quickly! :)

Thanks Saz1, I've done my pre-brekkie test and its down to a semi respectable total of 8.7, and I'm having oatsosimple for brekkie so that should be ok. Will do another test in 2 hrs and then after lunch, and so on throughout the day, and see what my lowest will be. I've hardly done tests as the nurse said every 2 or 3 days would be sufficient, so I've dont it now and then, but obviously I've not done it anywhere near enough. I intend to be doing it a couple of times a day minimum after todays every meal.
Do you know the answer to my other question on whether I can have a drink within the two hours before or after a meal??? as I need to get myself right on this one but I'm totally unsure what with treating my condition more of a pain in the **** instead of treating with the respect my body deserves.
Cheers,
John
PS: I think I've asked this before months ago, but honestly can't remember what answer I was given

Hi Johnny,
Please don't restrict your fluid intake. It is essential that you do not become dehydrated. Whilst water is the safest option of the lot not to interfere with your numbers, there is nothing to stop you drinking, tea, coffee and even red wine. Watch out for the sugar content of any fizzy drinks and choose the diet options. Fruit juices should be avoided as these will raise your blood sugars.
Hope there is something I have mentioned that will appeal to you.
Regards, Catherine.

Hi Catherine,
Thanks very much for that info; I now know I'm safe to have a drink, as I have been thirsty lately and been drinking my earl grey then thought I had another 2 hours to go lol. Nice to know its ok; I like the idea of the sugar free drinks too. I've got a massive 5ltr sugar free orange squash under the cupboard so out it comes then wahaaay lol :D
Cheers,
John

hya john,
keep drinking at all times as catherine says, im a tee a holic :D

Johnny,
Check the label on your squash to make sure about the sugar content as it may have other forms of sugar. Labels like, "Sugar Free" and "No added sugar" need to looked at carefully.
Regards,
Catherine.

Hi john
If you are thirsty a lot of the time, it could be you are running your sugars too high. Don't let yourself dehydrate, that will make your sugars higher and don't eat stuff that turns to sugar.

Hy folks, thanks for all your help. I feel I know more thanks to your messages, than what I've taken in (& not taken in) over the last few months. I think I had a rather bad attitude to it, because of being diet only I was doing it like I was my weightwatcher classes, up one week down the next and it'll sort itself out, but yesterday shook me up quite a bit, it's my future I could be bugg@ring up, so I'm really getting behind eating (& drinking) the right things. For a long time I've gone off fruit, veg, & proper fresh food so had been living off oven chips, new pots, mash & processed chicken ready meals, I've started today eating the fruit; I'm sure I'll get the taste again lol. I've even started up my actimel daily I got Jude to get me some with the shopping today complete with the fresh chicken breasts, so its full steam ahead, and if I can get the exercise problems sorted then everything will be hunky dory. I clawed my sugars back anyway today. I had 8.7 before brekkie, 8.4 afterwards, 6.7 before dinner and 7.6 after dinner, so hopefully my glitch is a thing of the past and I know I only have to keep check on here for what I need to know; I let my visits slip a bit (smack smack naughty me lol)/ Thanks everyone
John :D
