Has anyone tried okara powder?

Okara powder is the most usual flour substitute for low carb cooking in Japan where low carb diet is quite popular. 100g contains 350kcal, carbs 6g, fibre 45g, fat 16g, protein 25g

I've been using this product for a year to make cookies, muffins and pancakes etc and love it. It does not raise my BS and is not as fatty as almond flour. It has the same texture as flour.

Sadly it doesn't seem to be sold in UK and needs to be ordered from Japan.

Here in Pakistan, we do not use its powder as flour but it is recommended to eat more often since it is considered to have a low glycemic index

Just looked on Amazon for this. It’s over £70 for 500g!

@Rachox I saw it too. I think it's the shipping cost. Amazon Japan sells it for 453yen/3 pounds per 500g bag. So far I have been sourcing it from friends and family but I'm looking for a way to order directly

It's good to know it's available in Pakistan. I just find it a bit strange it's not sold at all in uk or Europe. Maybe due to lack of demand but it's a shame.

Looking it up it seems to be a waste product from soya milk production and is mostly used for animal feed. Soya flour is readily available and presumably has similar properties.

Hi @Mr_Pot

I think soya flour has a lot higher carb. Okara is very low in carb and very high in fibre. And yes it is leftover stuff from tofu/soya milk production. I've twice made tofu and okara from soy beans at home but not possible to make it in powder form at home.

I personally think this is a dream product for low carbing diabetics but just not known much outside of Japan.

If I can work out an easy way to order with a reasonable price tag, I will post again, though not sure if anyone is interested... In terms of carb content it's as good as almond flour and coconut flour but has a lot less fat and this is sold in fine powder just like flour. It has really broadened my cooking repertoire

Are you thinking okra or bhindi?
Okara is from soy I believe
