And another....Get someone to 'buy' your wart off you, and your wart will magically vanish!

Placing rusty nails or old irons around your plants will help them grow.

If you spill salt, it is believed to be unlucky, unless you throw a pinch of it over your LEFT shoulder, supposedly into the devil's eyes, thus distracting him from leading you into trouble.
 
My Nan wouldn't let me practice my French Horn by the window during thunder storms. She said that lightening was attracted to shiny things.

My dad is a bit of a joker. He told us all sorts of things when we were little that we believed to be true.- Like the reason that birds don't get electrocuted when the stand on wires, - coz they stand on one leg and don't complete the circuit. - I'll never forget the day that very question came up in my O level physics class! - I raised my hand, absolutely confident that I knew the answer..........and the teacher asked someone else..... Thank God!! I'd have never lived it down!! I don't think I've taken my dad totally seriously since, at least, not without checking first!

I just realised.

A bird flying into the house is supposed to mean coming death.

The first time I met my great uncle a T2 diabetic a bird flew into the house twice during our 6 weeks stay. It shocked me but I caught the bird both times and let it go outside.

Shortly after we left, he died

My father had a superstition that if you leave the house and have to return for something it is bad luck to go out again without sitting down first.

"Don't go swimming for at least an hour after you eat or you'll get a cramp and drown"
"Don't swallow your chewing gum or it'll be stuck in your stomach for 7 years"
"Hair grows back twice as fast and thick if you shave it off"
"If a bird flies in to your house it means someone is going to die"

Just some of the gems I've heard in my life :lol:
 
Ha these are hilarious! One for me is if you swallow chewing gum it will wrap around your heart & you will die! Can't tell you the panic I felt when I accidentally swallowed it one day! I came bursting into the house screaming & shouting & clutching my throat!!! A little dramatic for a 7 year old!

Oh this one is from my husband, his father used to tell him when the ice cream van plays music it means its out of ice cream!!!!
Another, whoever feels a babies new teeth coming through has to buy the baby a real pair of shoes!!

I heard,
Find a pin and pick it up... then all day you'll have a pin.
 
Well remember a staff meeting a few years back .
We all moved into another room as a couple of magpies kept marching back
and forth across the window on top of a roof .
We could see them doing this for ages ...
A colleague was convinced it would impose a death in her family or a friend .
We all shifted rooms to calm her down !!

Also the walk under a ladder and you will have bad luck .
Break a mirror and you will have 7 seven years bad luck .

My granny used to say that if you put a garment on inside out it was bad luck to turn it the right way round again .I have never heard yhis from anyone else .I always used to pretend to be very hot so that I could take my inside out cardigan off,but I only seemed to have it inside out when Granny was with us :eh:

I know there's one about red sky in morning and night and it involves a sailor and a shepherd. And you can tell the weather by it.

Also,

A spoonful of SUGAR helps the medicine go down.
