Hi Everybody!

I'm Sam new to this site, hoping to hear from other people and their experiences with insulin pumps! Over the last 4 months i have started using the Omnipod 5 which is my first pump in over 10 years, lots has changed with the variety of pumps that are now available and the technology that's now included. The Omnipod 5 has been a good experience so far however being, becuase I live outside the USA, (in Australia) we only have access to a controller pdm to run the Omnipod app. There is no phone based app available in my country. Has anybody experienced any frustrations with this aspect?? I'm hoping the app becomes available soon so i can ditch the controller and just carry one device, acessing on my phone.
 
Good morning Sam. I am also an Omnipod 5 user. I am based in UK.

It would be great if the controller was on your phone. For me in particular overnight I cannot hear the alarms on the pdm. It has taken up to 14 notifications for me to hear the alarm. I wear hearing aids which I remove at night. During the day not so much of a problem.

I have spoken to the pump team locally and Omnipod, unfortunately they do not have any solution to this.
Meantime I go to bed higher than I should so there is less chance of a low overnight.

Maybe one day the app will be available for your phone in places other than USA

Is anyone currently trialling or using the Omnipod 5/Freestyle Libre 2 Plus hybrid closed loop?

If so (if you are trialling that specific system, assuming you have not signed a non disclosure agreement concerning the trial), might you be able/willing to say whether you are content or discontent with the Omnipod 5/Freestyle Libre 2 Plus HCL system and if so why?

Would be particularly interested to know if you have found the Freestyle Libre 2 Plus is providing accurate glucose readings.

I have been on Omnipod 5 for almost a month now. My A1C beforehand was pretty stable at about 47-53mmol/mol when I would have my A1C tests done, however I had a lot of highs and lows so my doctor wanted me to try the Omnipod 5.

I have mixed opinions about it. I honestly don't think it's that great, however I've been on it for a short time. The main issues I have are that the infusion sites are painful, especially on the 3rd day and my most recent pod on my arm left a rash and the site became lumpy which it wasn't beforehand.

Short answer - yes, it's not as good as it could be, and it's not likely to go to phones.

Though the trial of the linking to librelink on phone in real time looks positive, because it might then be possible to forward that to a watch, which would mean no need to have phone or controller to hand and they could live in a bag. Useful during activity.

(Dexcom can already do this).

If you've got sugars visible, then the controller can stay less to hand - you only need it for bolus and mode switching. The pod does all the background dosage calculations itself.
 
It’s something to do with phone manufacturers not actually wanting to have their equipment considered as medical devices, which I fully understand. However, these same manufacturers are prepared to license such use on one continent but not another, which begs a whole series of other questions. That said, I use my phone most of the time to monitor glucose levels and my controller only when I have to. Yes, it means two pieces of equipment but it isn’t causing me problems.
 
I have been using the omnipod-5 for a couple of years and have been pleased with it. Still use the hand held pdm controller. These are very good. I am also using Dexcom G6 glucose sensor. Using this the alarms work well on my phone. To get it to sound loud adjust the volume on phone. It is the music volume on phone. I have mine set quite low. I had to adjust the pdm settings on mine to get good control.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I use Libre 2+ which does not allow me to get alarms on my phone. The only way I can get Dexcom is to fund it myself. For me this is not possible. Maybe one day funding will be available. Like you the Omnipod controller works well and apart from the alarms
