Type 2 On the LCHF diet or LCKD, how does monitoring my ketone levels help me?

I use a Freestyle Libre part time. Probably 50% up til now, but intend to use it less often in future.

I don't check ketones. Bought 10 Neo ketone test strips a couple of years ago, and still have 4 left. Just don't feel the need to know.

I get an Hba1c about once a year. My last one was below pre-D and my doc announced that it meant there was nothing wrong with me. He dismissed my clearly diabetic bg records without viewing them, though they show tests where i eat carbs, spike, hypo with Reactive Hypoglycaemia, and have erratic Dawn Phenomenon.

I pay privately for D3 test when the spirit moves me (the doc wouldn't run that test either)

Apparently, my doc has a problem with people taking responsibilty for their own health, and is unable to grasp the principles of dietary control. :banghead: I complained, got nowhere, and am changing docs ;)

Glad you're changing doctors Brunneria. Vitamin D3 levels are important, and problematic if too low or high. Without the test, we have no way of knowing if we're within range. A lot of us have to pay out of pocket for that test in the US too. Some doctors adhere to what they were taught in medical school, and aren't open to changing their way of thinking.

In the US, the problem is the pharmaceutical driven education they receive, not to mention risk of losing their medical license and threat of law suit if they stray too far from conventional treatments.

Happily, in the US, with the introduction of naturopathic and functional medicine 25+ years ago, more doctors are seeking training that empowers them to actually help their patients through use of appropriate lab tests, diet, nutritional supplements, exercise, and, if needed, medication. We have a long way to go.

For now, I have my lectures, interviews, books, articles, and members of this forum to guide me. Wish I knew then what I know now so I could have stopped the progression of my diabetes before I became severely insulin resistant. That said, I'm enjoying good health now, in great part thanks to you all.

Hope the next doc is a good one! :)

Thanks :)

I am feeling MUCH better now the Vit D is sorted. Must have been deficient for decades. What a difference now :D

After summer holidays and a perceived bit of carb creep I'm on a ketotic diet now.

I measure each morning to see that I still have ketones and the benefits for me are that it's a really good way of keeping on the straight and narrow. You cannot have a little cheat or else you'll drop out and then have a few days possibly of getting back on the wagon. So, whilst on holiday I would have the odd beer I wouldn't dream of doing that now as I know it'll kick me out of ketosis.

The advantage is therefore psychological in terms of blood sugars but practical too; as my weekly average blood sugar has gone down from 7.7 mmol/l to 6.1 mmol/l without hypos or much hassle. So, if I can maintain that I will have a really good HbA1c next time.

I'm also losing weight which is good because my weight has been static and slightly higher than is ideal.

I don't know if I 'feel' any different on ketosis but I'm probably less hungry and have been sleeping a bit better.

So, I'm very happy to try and stick with ketosis for the reasons above.

Best

Dillinger
