My first meeting with my DN was immediately after diagnosis a month ago and was just a chat and leaflets. Today I had my first proper meeting, and came away feeling very satisfied.

Urine sample was good - no sugar, protein or blood.
Feet checked - strong pulse, no loss of feeling (despite having chemotherapy-induced neuropathy in them).
Appointments ordered for retina check and invitation for Xpert course.
Discussion about carbs. She agrees these should be cut and not eaten as per the "healthy plate" guidelines. She nodded in agreement at my 130gms a day.
Discussion about a meter. I can have one if I insist, after my next HbA1c test in April, but should only use it once a week to test a new food.
I am a model patient, well motivated, and she thinks I will be able to avoid meds and see a decrease in my levels next test.

Great. Sounds like my DN who advised me to go to this forum. I am diet controlled, no meds. i try to keep my carbs under 100 a day as I am also trying to loose weight. One year on my hba1c has gone down from 65 to 42. I was given a meter without asking and I can get 100 strips a month. I did use that many to start of with but now only test a couple of times a week and when I eat new food. Beware though that meters are not very accurate. A single test after a new food is not conclusive. I repeat the test when I eat the new food again. Good luck. I hope your test in April shows improvement.

Thanks everyone. I am more than pleased, especially as I feel my 10lbs weight loss in 5 weeks on my fairly easy diet is going to get me somewhere.
I should also add my BP has improved to the extent I got worried it was getting too low! It has dropped from the high 150's (systolic) to a steady 120, with some checks as low as 112 and never above 130. I can only put this down to going low salt and increased exercise.
