hi all been type 2 diabteic for over 3 years and dispite everything ive tried now been moved onto insuin twice daily im a bit scared about this as i cant get my head round it the nurse was brillent with me and ive read all the lealfets under the sun. But id really like some guidence to start of with thank you

I’m type 2 and I have been on insulin for a year. It is quite scary at first just thinking about it, but it gets easier in quite a short time.

To begin with I expect you will double check everything before each injection. Before too long it becomes automatic.

I expect your nurse has started you on a low dose, and it’s not unusual to need to increase that dose slowly over time. Sounds like your nurse will be a great helping with that.

Some practical suggestions.

Make sure you always have hypo treatment on you just in case. I carry tubes of fruit pastilles for a quick fix as they fit in a pocket, or bag. Also I find packs of two biscuits easy to provide a longer blood sugar boost.

I set a repeat alarm on my phone to remind me to take the insulin, if I’ve cancelled the alarm I know I’ve injected!

You need to test before you drive. Must not start to drive if you are below 5. If you use a blood sugar meter you must have it with you when driving, if you use a CGM have your phone or reader with you. If you have a hypo stop driving and move out of the driving seat. You must notify dvla once you go on insulin. There’s a form you can fill in online. As long as you haven’t needed anyone’s help to deal with a hypo, and you have hypo awareness you should keep your car licence but you will need to renew every three years.

Any other questions you have just ask.
 
thank you ive already notifed them via the form did that when i camre back from the seeing the nurse this afternoon i cant think of anything in partucular at the moment doubtless 20 questions will set in once im up and running so to speak lol
 
Just keep asking…..

Also if you have annual travel insurance tell them, and car insurance on renewal.
 
yeah they cover everything its a lease car that you rent though your pip they are ahacetity that lease cars out esp for people woth disabtlies so im coivered in that
 
You need to contact them ASAP, it’s a change of circumstances, if you have an accident or need to claim for anything at all, even if it’s nothing to do with your diabetes, your insurance won’t be valid. It’s just like any other car insurance
 
if have an accident suggest take a glucose reading :) remember to test prior to driving you require to test every couple of hours of driving as well.
