Ophthamology today, shocked and scared

Hello guys, I have been trying for a while now to write this thread, I was stunned when the doctor told me there is now a hole as well as the blood vessel pulling on the membrane in my right eye. He was surprised that I was there because I had my eye laser appointment with Mr K in July. I told the doctor about an appointment that came in the post today for my referral to Southampton Hospital for Tuesday 13 August. Today's doctor said he needed to have a word with his superior, came back and the bottom line is , when I go for my Southampton appointment I should take an over night bag because he thinks I will need an operation on my eye. If my eye gets worse and my vision goes black over the weekend I need to get to Frimley Green Hospital as they deal with weekend emergencies. I am still in shock, I felt and still do very scared, I will have to get someone to look after my daughter, I will be in a strange hospital and on the way home on the bus, I was staring out of the window getting choked up, Luckily I had my sunglasses on. I can't believe what has happened today, totally unexpected worried. My head is all over the place with mixed emotions, some bad andsome good because at least I know what it is, as I knew something still wasn't right .

Doctor said to put my feet up with my head back and to relax and take it easy over the next 4 days and I mustn't do anything strenuous or bending forward or down. I just want to cry, I have butterflies in my stomach and I don't want Tuesday to come now:cry:
 
Oh no, my heart goes out to you and I wish there was something that I could do to make you better, to help you, to reassure you and look after your lovely daughter.

All I can do is hope and pray and send you big, big hugs, please dont feel alone, we all care about you, very much so x x
 
(((hugsss rrb))) everything will turn out fine, things are always better than they seem, they will get you sorted and you will be back stronger than ever, try not to worry to much, we will all be thinking about you and wishing you well, try to relax and stay calm.

Oh, RRB, I suspect that he's given you a worse case scenario so that you would know what to do. Do as he says and try not to do anything too strenuous until your appointment.

I will be thinking of you and send my love and prayers; I wish I could do more.

Sorry to hear your news, it may not sound like much at the moment, but its amazing what they can achieve now, I know its easy for me to say but please try to take it easy like they say you should. Things often don't turn out as bad as they first seam.

My very best wishes go to you and your family as well as my prayers.

Hi RRB, sorry to hear about this latest news you must be worried but as I said in the earlier thread try not to stress too much and take the docs advice and just try to stay relaxed and calm till your appointment.

I really think that Southampton Hospital could have given you more information about the possible length of your stay there so you werent left making last minute arrangements fro your daughter.

I'm sure things will work out well for you and the operation will be a huge success.

Sorry to hear your news. I feel the urge to tell you to take it easy over the next few days; but I know that what's going on will play on your mind and you'll be feeling stuck in a kind of limbo till you get to hospital and get the ball rolling.

Try to trust that things are happening just as they should, and I wish you all the best with the treatment and recovery.

I sympathise wih you rrb. You just come to terms with one thing and are hit by another.

i am sure Phoenix is right . They have to tell you these things -imagine what a pickle you would be in if you hadn' made your preparations.

I understand these "holes " are quite common. Most good eye surgeonns 2specialise 2 in tha surgery in heir privae clinics.
really you will be in the safes place overnight.

I am sure you will asorb his latest shock as you did the other. If his had to happen its as well it happened now when you are going to be treated anyhow.

This sort of surgery is never as bad as it sounds . It is a natural , humsn reaction to want o protect our eyes and eye surgery is
a totally alien concept whic is why people are so squemish abou it.

as I always say its better than the alernative.

The scaries hinhg I have faced in six years of treatment has been to be told hat no further reatment may be possible.
i am sure you are going o be fine. You are obviously going o be see and treated by an expert and your good MR K is rooting for you as is everyone here.
 

RRB, I've been thinking about phoenix's reply and I reckon he/she (sorry phoenix)
and Unbeliever confirmed, is correct.
I'm going for a very simple op to remove a cataract, first on my left eye, later this month,
then the right eye at a later date yet to be confirmed. The point is, the doctor giving
me the pre-op assessment, stressed I must understand that for some patients, the op
can lead to blindness. Only, and only if, I accept that risk, was I to sign the "permission to
continue the op" form.

I did.

You are in a vexing situation that's weighing (understandably so) heavily on your mind.
but please, in as much as you are able, keep phoenix's words at the forefront of your mind.

Yes you are righ wee Willie. They are obliged o give you the worse case scenario. i have been having procedures for years which carry a 50% risk of blindness.
Not having them meant something like a 997 risk of blindness, So what do you think I did/

Poor RRB. I am truly sorry for her. She has had the prospect of going to a different hospital to see unknown people and on top of that she now learns there is an additional condition.AnD she faces he prospect of an overnight stay and all the arrangements she must make for her father and daugjter, Anyone would be stressed.

I am sure it will all work out much better than she epects but he op itself as an unknown mus be stressful enough wihou he additional complicaions.
They seem to be tghtening up n consent forms in the hospital. I was involved in a huge fuss when i had my second caarac op a ew months ago.
part of his is that he Dr has to ensure he paient fully understands he risks, Of course he result is o frighen many patients who assume a much larger risk than acually exists or who don't know he number of ops involved. It could be a very small number done only in exreme cases so that he outcomes seem worse han might be expected.
the hole was I suspec just abou o appear when you klast saw our consultant RRbb. if it wasn't acually visible that could explain why he wanted a second opinion.
anyhow all the best . this time next week it will all be over with, Things are seldom as bad as we anticipate are they/
