I understand the point of testing after meals but i dont know if it really helps me.
eg. this morning had 2 Wheatabix, before 5.4, one hour after 5.4.
Surely all I am proving is that my medication is working, or am i missing the point somewhere, it would not be the first time.
Testing needs to be done especially if newly diagnosed or if aiming for tight Bg control. Only testing after 1 hr is not telling you very much. It is usually the time when some foods can 'spike' your Bg levels, however there are certain foods in which the 'spike' will be MUCH later on.
What usually happens is you test before a meal, then eat. Test after 2 hrs and your Bg levels should be going back to the pre meal reading. If it does, all well and good.......if it doesn't and is higher then that shows that it may still be rising and that tests later, say 3 or even 4 hrs might be needed. What you have eaten may need to be cut back in portion size say, or the actual amount of carbs reduced.
Oral meds do not usually make a significant difference to Bg levels, just small amounts. Your choice of diet/exercise will have a more significant effect.
Thanks for the reply. When i first went to the Doctors ( mid December ) my Bg reading was off the scale of his machine and he just started me on meds. My first reading after one week was 34.1. I went back each week and he increased my meds. to what they are now. Within 5 weeks my Bg in the morning was 4.9 to 5.6, which it still is.
In those first few weeks I had no advice whatsoever, you would of thought I was the first person to have diabetes, so i can honestly say that i didn't really alter anything much. Therfore the meds made a massive difference for me. I had my first blood test four weeks ago. 7.6% .
