Hi, I have a daughter aged 14 who was diagnosed just over a year ago. We have struggled with levels for the last 10 months. Sugar levels fluctuate from 4 to 32. Spent most of October in hospital in dka when changed from lantus to levemir. Still control is not good. Jess has levemir 27 units twice daily, carb counts 1:5 for breakfast and 1:10 rest of day. Corrects every meal time on a 1 to 1 basis needing anything up to 20 units of correction - each meal time. Is on metformin to try and reduce insulin intolerance. Suffers with bone pains/joint pains. Gets re-occurring chest infections, has epi pens for allergies. Seems to have problems with bone marrow swelling. can't identify spikes with any particular food. Used to be allergic to eggs and milk but ok now, severely allergic to nuts and peas. Gets hayfever and has a mild allergic reaction to cats and dust. Anyone any clue please? Oh and eats around 80 - 100 carbs a day. Thank you for reading. Karen

Every month I listen to Dr Bernstein's webinar and almost every month a mother asks why their teenage daughter's BG levels which always used to be good have suddenly become erratic. He said he had spoken to Dr Lois Jovanovic who specialises in female diabetics and she said that she usually puts these patients on birth control pills to even out their hormone levels. Since your daughter was diagnosed around the same time she went through puberty, possibly hormonal issues are involved?

As for the allergies, there is growing evidence that all autoimmune conditions (Type 1 being one) are likely to have a degree of intestinal permeability as a precursor. One of the major triggers for intestinal permeability is gluten - and it is very common for Type 1s to also have coeliac and/or gluten intolerance. I think it might be worthwhile at least trying your daughter on a gluten free diet for at least a month to see if it helps settle her allergies and erratic BG (gluten can also affect BG levels).

I'm hoping one of the Type 1's who also has coeliac will add their experiences as well.

Good luck with it all.
