Out of control !!!

Hi all, I'm borderline going crazy, my sugars are just way out of control, morning pre breakfast 19.1, and onwards and up, night 24.9, I have spoke to my partner, she says I don't eat excessively, and I know you are going to tell me about carbs, and I really am going to give it a go, so why moan ? Well my kidneys took a battering from a bacterial infection so on antibiotics for well who knows, have just read about Lanzoprazole reacting against other drugs I take, Glycazide vit b strong compound, Thiamine to mention a few, my energy levels are poor, just feel knackered, or not good, going to see my doc, or nurse asap, think I need further tests, I know I'm going on, so sorry, just want to be and feel ' normal ' thanks guys and gals

Yes, you are going to be told about low carb. There, you have been told lol Obviously you know what to do but those numbers are extremely high and I would think more testing to be sure what type you are is very important. If I were you I would push hard for the tests and not take no for an answer. The high sugar levels make everything else, especially infections, much harder for your body to deal with and most certainly can cause fatigue and brain fog as well as just a feeling of being unwell or off. You do not have to eat excessively to have high levels, just eating the wrong things. Many people get diagnosed after eating extremely low calorie for a long time. I hope you can get testing soon. It is very important.
 
Hi @Fox1001, it sounds like you are going through the mill. Infections and antibiotics have a negative effect on the body in more ways than the obvious. I think it reasonable the your BS would be higher, but your numbers seem particularly high. Good to hear that you are going to see a doctor, absolutely the right thing to do.

And yes all carbs are evil and should be punished. Have a look at the LCHF section, its not as bad as you might think.
 
Agree with the others that your levels are way too high with all the associated health risks. It is possible that you have the same problem as me i.e. undiagnosed T1. There was an article from Diabetes UK recently saying T1 can strike at any age but among older people (how old are you?) the large numbers of new T2 cases leads doctors to assume any new case in older people is T2. My nurse eventually said 'I'll order this test but it's very unlikely you are T1'. As soon as the results came back I was put on a full insulin regime and my HbA1c levels came straight down to where they should be and apart from the odd 12 after meals my BS levels stay nicely in the 4-10 range.
 
Hi thanks for your replies, I'm type 2, have got a phone callback from the surgery ??? I'm 55 been diagnosed for about 6 years, never really had any support, this forum has opened my eyes you all seem to have so much knowledge, I will persevere with my GP, will ask for c-peptide and GAD tests, and to see a specialist, my bs pre breakfast this morning was 22, thank you all.

WOW and not in a good way. That is so very high.

I am a similar age and diabetic duration. I do recall my bloods being at a similar level and had to try many medications before the one that worked.
 
Hi Dik, quick update, I spoke to a doctor who told me to be quick as she had a busy schedule, told her my levels were high, she said when from, I said only been testing properly with the new kit the nurse gave me 4 weeks ago, she said so how long have they been high, I said haven't got a clue, she said she was too busy make an appt with the nurse again, I said it's impossible she's always fully booked up, the doc will leave her a message to contact me, why do I get the feeling that the doc wasn't interested and didn't care, really frustrated with the experience and now know GP'S do not understand diabetes and the problems that could happen if it isn't under control.

My usual diet would be a bowl of fruit and fibre, yes I know wheat and and not fresh fruit, so high in sugars, mid day an apple and satsuma, lunch a chicken or other meat stir fry, and a sandwich at teatime, and drink is either water or tea, nobody is perfect and the odd couple of beers is good for winding down, from that you can see too many carbs, what's an alternative breakfast, stir frys are cooked in rapeseed oil, fruit in moderation is the right sugars for you, or so I've been told, and I enjoy a beer, really don't want to live like a nun, but do understand changes have to be made, all the bs monitors I've had never really worked well, kept coming up err, so I rarely used it, now I check morning pre breakfast, 2 hours later, and mid afternoon and evening, since doing this it's just been between 18-25, when I had my kidney infection I almost died the consultant told me this, then a senior nurse told me if I had any underlying conditions I would have died, I asked what do you mean, she said well diabetes I said I am diabetic she was shocked, they were treating the infection but not my diabetes!! But I'm always cheerful and definitely half glass full bloke, and after that life is a bonus, I do have a few medical conditions alongside diabetes, so I presumed they would take this a little more serious than they are.

Have you checked out the low carb program on this site? Sugars that high are slowly killing you. It is not a matter of nobody is perfect and there is no such thing as the right sugars for a type 2 diabetic. Sugar is sugar and your body does not know if it came from an orange or a sandwich or a bowl of M&M's. If you don't want to cook in the morning try cold hard boiled eggs or full fat yogurt. There are also low carb muffins or even bulletproof coffee if you like it. You also need to take this more seriously, no one else can do it for you.
 
when I was diagnosed my fasting blood sugar reading was 18.4 -which presumably means the stuff around it would have been like yours. I stopped eating carbs that day and within a couple it was around 10 and within three weeks on 6. You might not be so lucky but you might find the difference is similarly huge if you make the switch . Good luck .
 
Yes. Carb reduction and removal is the key to quick medication free glucose control.

And LCHF is the most enjoyable way to go about it. I love my butter, eggs and roast pork belly.
 

Her first question can only be understood if your high reading was a "one off". Is this the sort of response we're going to get from our GPs because of programs like Panorama last night? Maybe when she asked how long have they been high you should have what you knew, since you started recording by the sounds of it. Technically it could have been longer, as in before you started to use the meter, but it playing games with words really.

Have you seen an endocrinologist? Maybe a referral is required in which case you need to see the GP.

Are you near any other surgeries? Your GP doesn't sound that good if she's going to tell you that she's too busy to deal with you, have you upset her or something? LOL

Good luck. BTW, make an appointment with the GP, even if the best they can do is 3 weeks away. Make sure you have all your BG readings with you, in fact write down what you want to say. I do that, much to my GP's amusement, I just tell her that I talk to much and I'd need my 10 minutes just to say "hello" and "how are you today".
 
HI - quite frankly I WOULD CHANGE MY DOCTOR/HEALTH PRACTICE to another - one with a specialist diabetic doctor and nurse ASAP!!!! My practice is not great for appointments, but they do let one see the diabetic nurse, who will do tests and refer to the diabetic doctor if things look wrong. Have to say I have researched and read-up on diabetes and LC/HF lifestyle and made MY OWN decisions - refused to take Metaformin or Statins. The nurse and doctor don't really recommend my lifestyle change (as they haven't read the research), but they have ACTIVELY SEEN how it IS working for me, so they don't argue any more; even the diabetic dietician is 'behind the times' and says (mistakenly) that there has not been enough research done into LC/HF! (A bit alarming that I feel I now know more than the nurse, but she listens and does the tests I ask for). The NHS is still 40 years behind - still hooked on the LF/HC diet era! They won't want to admit they've been wrong all along though will they; and the giant food manufacturers don't want LC/HF as it's a threat to their massive profits - so we have to stand up for ourselves. I would suggest to read up low carb high fat or Ketognic. My glucose readings have normalize after more than a year with lchf. Personally I'd say this is your only choice or otherwise it will be painful.
