I was diagnosed back in March 2011. Started taking action in June.
I have just had an unprecedented run of ten+ days of early morning fasting results in the 5s. I do not know why except that the action I am taking might be gathering some sort of momentum - certainly haven't done anything different in the last fortnight.
Does anyone have a similar experience?
And am I right in thinking that non-diabetic fasting blood ( over night) is below 6.0mmol/L?
I also noticed that the as I got control of my sugar levels there was an additional improvement that was nothing to do with anything I did. I did three consecutive mornings of fasting tests on myself and all of them were in the fives. Hitherto they were just short of 7 being 6.9, 6.8 etc.
This happened many months after I started taking glimipiride and did not happen straight away. I was offered the chance of stopping the pills to see what happens but I have not had the ideal circumstances I need for a proper comparison yet but I plan to do the test in the future.
My +2 after meals readings are also more acceptable than they were.
Hi. Note that early morning fasting blood tests can be a bit misleading due to the problem of overnight liver dumps where the body prepares for the day by releasing 'glucose' into the blood. This is why a fasting test, for example, is not the best way for a GP to diagnose diabetes; the GTT is much better. Much better to test 2 hours after a meal to find out what foods affect you. The HBa1c test is a reliable way to indicate average blood sugars
Thanks, yes - I'm 8 months into diagnosis and test regularly throughout the day. Having experienced a gradual and now sustained decrease in my early morning reading I feel something must be getting better. It is now beginning to happen during the day too. Due for another HbA1c in February, so fingers crossed!
