Hi everyone, first time posting here.
My huband (previously fit and healthy 38 year old) was very unwell over the Christmas holidays and in hospital where he was diagnosed with T1diabetes. He is now out of hospital and was told to take at least 6 weeks off of work. He still feels awful and is having at least one hypo a day and his bloods are all over the place. The problem is hes just found out that his work only pay 10 days sick leave, so his January pay is half of his normal pay and if he stays home as the doctor said, next month will be much worse. I am worried because he is saying he'll just force himself back next week as things are not yet under control and he is feeling extremely tired and nauseous all the time (along with the hypos) but equally, we can live on my wage alone.
Are there any protections within employment law (we are in Scotland) for people in this situation?
Thanks in advance everyone.

Hi @dinsathome & welcome to the forum

There’s nothing that directly covers diabetes that I can find (and I very much doubt there is) but your hubby should be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay if he’s not already claiming it, the link below is to the ACAS website that explains all the criteria for SSP & how to claim

Sorry you are both having this worry, it’s very hard when your income stream alters and the stress & worry of it won’t be helping your hubby or indeed yourself. But sometimes we have to put health first

Maybe contact Citizens Advice as they may have information of more benefits or temporary resources you can access.

Have a read around the forum, especially the T1 section, there are lots of useful threads by our T1 members that may help you. Please ask any questions you have, although I’m a T2 so my knowledge of T1 is very limited.

Can you persuade your hubby to join the forum himself, it may be to his advantage to read the threads & ask his own questions

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

As a working T1 for decades. (Depending on how active the job is?)
I find I need to adjust my basal (long acting insulin.) to a slightly lower dose to accommodate with regards to minimising hypos.

If your husband is keen on getting back to work? He could talk with his employer.
There are discrimination acts from 2010 to protect employees, too.

Possibly he could ease back into his role at a steady pace untill he’s more acquainted with managing his diabetes?

Best wishes to you both..

Just a thought, but is he a member of a union who could advocate for him???
