Hi everyone,

For about the last 2 years I have been experiencing pain in my liver area every morning and sometimes in the evening. The pain begins slowly but eventually it goes from
being slightly uncomfortable to completely unbearable where I start to gasp for air! The pain begins in the liver area and spreads to below my left rib cage.

Originally I thought it was caused because of gallstones (I had my gallbladder removed) but the pain eveyday has continued.

The only thing that makes the pain go away is if I drink at least a litre of water and eat food.

Anyone know what is causing the pain?
I have been for liver tests and the doctors say my liver is fine.

Have you had your liver ultra sounded?

It sounds like a digestive disorder rather than liver?

I get a pain in my liver when I have eaten too many carbs during the last few days. I have always assumed that it's the liver 'dumping' some of the excess glucose making my fasting BG's higher than they would have been. Like yours it stays until I have eaten and/or drunk something. My liver isn't fine though I still have a fatty liver, although it's much improved.

Hi Just a thought, there's a fatty liver and also an elevated liver, which does cause pain ( elevated enzymes ). It's best to go and see your GP for a proper investigation and diagnosis. I do hope you start to feel more comfortable very soon

With best wishes and take care.

I have come to the conclusion that I have a fatty liver, but I don't understand why the pain episodes have not ceased in their frequency seeing as I have a vastly better diet now...

Maybe the pain is caused by the sugar levels in my blood. Because for the past few
months I can't eat anything that's high in carbs otherwise I get really dizzy.

My doctor did a liver test and I went to a liver specialist who said the test they did was more indepth but everything came back normal..so yeah I have no idea whats going on.

Ok.. I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong) that liver tests can still prove some functionalitys in normal range when it is technically a fatty liver. I believe that like myself having spleen and liver ultrasounded next week is the best way to see the actual size of the liver and to see if anything else is going wrong.
My liver, lungs and spleen all being checked out after my B12 is way over the target range. As white blood count and other tests proved leukaemia not the cause.
I think a Doctor should be able to say 100% that they could rule x, y, z out.. When I asked my docotors if they could guarantee 100%that my phenomenal B12 readings aren't indicative of a disease.. Thats when they decided to do more tests. I did also have an email from a haemotolgist and diabetic consultant telling the doctor too.

Can you be sure that this is liver? How have you ruled out that it isn't stomach problems?

Do you drink alchohol? I guess the liver specialist asked this?

Below the left ribcage could indicate an enlarged spleen.
A Doctor can check this with a physical examination.
Seriously don't ignore this, this is your filter

I thought the liver was a large organ on our right side? (If someone looking at you, it would be their left).

The spleen I thought is the organ under left side of ribcage too.

Morning Fred, it must be frustrating not knowing the actual cause of what your pain is. When we have pain it's to tell us that something is wrong. It's probably a simple thing that hasn't been investigated yet ? it could be a long process because of eliminating other medical conditions. Take care

I think the liver is at its largest on the right side, just where your highest spare tyre is, if you have a spare tyre. It then spreads out across the middle and tapers. The pancreas is on the left., as is the spleen.

When I was ill (i n pregnancy at 33 weeks), I had awful pain some of it shooting up the right side of my back throughout the night, it eased off when I woke up but when I had a cup of tea it started again and it was an elevated liver. That was one of my symptoms and caused trouble in walking to GP's as it was so uncomfortable,

Thats a good expression to use with gp, like that "surely a pain on a constant basis is a sign that something is wrong" never used that and hope I don't anymore.

As the pain is going to left side I would be asking for an ultrasound of liver, spleen and pancreas.

Fred, you should go back and say the pain is no better and ask for further teats.

Agree with noblehead.

Just to add my thoughts to this, I also have a similar pain on & off during the day, I have to take extra enzymes & digestion medication when I eat- I'm douled up in agony if I don't so make an appointment with your GP & get this investiated

good luck x
