Hi everyone,
For about the last 2 years I have been experiencing pain in my liver area every morning and sometimes in the evening. The pain begins slowly but eventually it goes from
being slightly uncomfortable to completely unbearable where I start to gasp for air! The pain begins in the liver area and spreads to below my left rib cage.
Originally I thought it was caused because of gallstones (I had my gallbladder removed) but the pain eveyday has continued.
The only thing that makes the pain go away is if I drink at least a litre of water and eat food.
Anyone know what is causing the pain?
I have been for liver tests and the doctors say my liver is fine.

What has your gp said?Hi glad I found this thread as I have similar. I was convinced it was gallstones after reading the symptoms online. The pain goes from excruciating to manageable but still with painkillers. Had a scan last wed for stomach and all came back clear. Been put on tabs in case it's ulcer whilst still being looked at. So frustrating as I'm awake most of the night in pain and sleeping during the day, pain is worst at night. I used to drink quite heavy due to anxiety etc but don't drink at all now as I had also thought the 2 many be linked. Bloods all came back clear. I do drink quite a bit of water but will increase it to see if it helps. Need to get this sorted quick as off work at the minute, thankfully they have been great.
They 're stumped to be honest. Just process of illumination. I've been put on ulcer tabs as symptoms similar and back at docs on wed. When I thought it was gallbladder I followed the advice to cut out triggers..fat, alcohol, spicy foods etc and it's def helped but not completely. I'll try anything at this stage. Had 3 hours sleep last night and shattered, some night I get none. What has your gp said?
Have you got a fatty liver? Have you had an ultrasound?Hi glad I found this thread as I have similar. I was convinced it was gallstones after reading the symptoms online. I have a fatty liver and just been diagnosed with cirrhosis non alcohol relatedI used to get this too. I always thought it was the liver throwing out excess glucose in the morning. I only ever got it when I had fatty liver. I found it strangely comforting to know the liver was doing it's job but struggling with it. If I ever get it now I know I have had too many carbs and need to reduce them. Of course I may be wrong, but to me it's the liver saying 'help, have fewer carbs so I can catch up'.
I had a ultrasound that didn't show up anything. Was admitted to hospital on Friday after pain was getting worse, endoscope confirmed I have inflammation of the stomach lining. For now I have tabs etc but they have also taken a biopsy. Doc feels the back pain is a separate issue and further tests are planned. For now home again and have to say the stay in hospital was the worst I've ever experienced, pain wasn't managed at all and also left fasting until 11.45 at night when they decided the endoscope would now be delayed until the next day. The senior nurse couldn't have been more unhelpful if she had tried and I was really glad to be home, still in a lot of pain but I'd rather manage it myself.Have you got a fatty liver? Have you had an ultrasound?
I've had similar pain issues in my upper abdomen for years so I can understand a bit of what you are going through. If you need to be in hospital again please speak up about poor care such as inadequate pain relief and a long period of having no food.I had a ultrasound that didn't show up anything. These are basic medical needs and they can have a big impact on your health. Every senior nurse has a manager, and also had doctors who can step in if needed. Pain has to be hit hard early on or it makes your health worse.
During your fast, were your BGs taken regularly? I always ask for and receive IV fluids with glucose when I have to fast in hospital. Even dropping to 4.5 makes me feel miserable, and who needs that when you're already suffering.
I want to reassure you that this doesn't need to happen again. When being admitted to hospital, a nurse comes over with paperwork, asks questions and takes notes. At that time, when you say you are a diabetic, they are meant to take note that you must be given glucose if you will be fasting and your BG drops below a certain level.Hi yes all blood test we're done regular. I had to speak up eventually as I couldn't believe how long I had been kept waiting. Was admitted as a emergency and explained the endoscope could happen at any time that day, by mid evening I repeatedly questioned if it was still happening, in the end I said can you speak to the doctor, if you can't I am happy to do so as I am diabetic and need to plan if and when I can eat. The pain management I don't know how many times I spoke with them to say the morphine wasn't touching it. Only when I again asked to speak to the doctor and said I would not be going for a endoscopy in this pain, was I given a further morphine injection. Very poor they were and unfortunately I have to go back for other tests etc. Seems to be the way now that I am continually pushing my doctor or hospital for something that you would expect as standard.
Thanks Jenny, I will definitely be more vocal if I am ever admitted again. It was my one fear of pain not being managed that delayed me going into hospital. If it happens again I'll make sure the doc is aware and not be robbed off. Thanks againI want to reassure you that this doesn't need to happen again. As soon as you notice this being ignored, you need to ask to speak to a doctor. The same goes with any request for more pain relief. In my experience, doctors are more likely to understand that not enough pain relief actually makes you more ill. Some nurses don't understand that. It's very poor nursing practice to let a person stay in pain, especially with the medical issues you were having. When a doctor writes in the notes that the patient asked for more relief and they agreed, it is harder for the nurses to ignore the order.
I know it can be hard to organise at short notice, but if you can take a support person with you to hospital, this also helps ensure they take better care of you. Ideally, you would have people taking it in shifts to be there as an advocate and monitor when needed. Not many of us have enough family and friends willing and able to do that. My family are willing but they tend to be a bit relaxed about things, like the nurses.
Good luck and keep speaking up for your needs.
Since taking ibs meds mine has gone. Have you ibs? They 're stumped to be honest. Just process of illumination. I've been put on ulcer tabs as symptoms similar and back at docs on wed.
