Pain in right thigh Bone/muslce - Turned into TIA (Ministroke)

Hi All,

Just thought I'd update you, last week (Sun) I finally got around to asking on here if anyone else had had a 'Pain in right thigh bone/muscle' after months of it only really bothering me at night.... Oh and I should correct that it was actually my left leg... Anyway, long story short, I then suffered a problem while out shopping at Tesco's (Tues) where my leg gave way (it just wasn't there) and I had to quickly just stand/hop on my right leg to stop myself falling over... I kept trying to stand on my left leg, but each time, it just felt like it wasn't there/being very weak... it took me about 30mins to able to shuffle out of tesco's before things started sorting themselves out. with lots of pain now coming from the leg....

But I thought nothing of it, other than it was a continuation of my leg pain issue, but then I thought, that actually I better see the Dr, before anything else happened (as this leg pain issue seemed to be here to stay having had it for months), so Thurs saw the doctor, to my surprise he wasn't interested in the fact I'd not mentioned a leg issue before, however he was concerned about my leg giving way, and not being there/being weakened. He then told me that, that was a classic TIA symptom, which as being diabetic, and having elevated cholesterol, I was at very high risk from - (and slightly overweight.....)

He immediately prescribed me aspirin, even thou I offered to get tesco's best 30p Box, but he insisted... He also said he was contacting the stroke unit at Winchester (I live in Hampshire) who would get hold of me very shortly to see a consultant.

I suppose I still hadn't quite registered how serious this was as I asked him how many pills was he prescribing (16) and that I suppose I'll just buy another box when they run out... He said that they would contact me and I would be seen before I ran out, take one pill a day...

The stroke unit called me 3 hours later and I had an appointment the next day (Fri)...

So I saw consultant who listened to what happened he also ignoring the leg pain and confirmed with questions that I was presenting a TIA, he organised an ultrasound of my neck (jugular veins area) which I had 30mins later and an MRI organised for next week of my head as they want to check the brain for signs of a TIA.

In the meantime he immediately issued me with a blood thinner (clopidogrel) and organised a repeat appointment with him in 6 weeks times (unless he calls me in earlier).

All of this from a leg pain... I just thought that as I'd not seen anything (on here) on Mini-Strokes (especially as we are high risk) that I ought to let others know, as I just thought that this was my leg issue playing up, I'd never of thought it was a TIA... Its still might not be, but it is getting checked out.

As well as the the blood thinner I've now started taking the Statin that I've been in two minds about...

But now its simple, Mini-stroke can lead to a Stroke, that being the case I'd rather remove the possibility in the short term and do everything I can, so taking Pravastatin as well, until everything is check out and diet wise as well, low fat now, not high fat.

I'll let you know how I get on, I'm not worried, just glad I saw the Doctor, I didn't think it was going to turn out to be this serious.

Hey @wookie101 that is quite the scenario! So glad as @Mike D said that you were proactive and went to see the Doc. Kudos for him to act so quickly as well. Good lesson for all of us not to ignore or pass off things that aren't just right - we know our own bodies best.....Thanks for sharing. Sending thoughts and prayers that things will get sorted out after the MRI and that nothing untoward has happened in your head. Blessings/L

Hope everything goes well I have had 2 Strokes or so I thought back in the day when I was not taking my diabetes seriously enough I had an Italian Meal in Bangkok when the owner gave us a free grappa. a strong drink in the tequila style but an acquired taste and was surprised when I Knocked it straight Back and did not sip it first So he poured me another same thing. went home felt dizzy sat on the floor and could not get up for several minutes went to bed slept well the next day Saturday went to Local Hospital explained what had happened and ask for full check up took 3 hours nothing detected went home relaxed watched football went to bed Sunday same thing relaxed in morning Then had a stroke ambulance hospital MRIs the lot doctor told me I had had two strokes. the first being the Saturday incident. well Recovered slowly then about a year later had a third although this time I recognized the symptoms and got a taxi to the hospital. Myself all this was a wake up call to me and gave me the incentive to take my Diabetes more seriously Better Late than Never

About a year ago I had been out with the lads (Drinking diet coke and playing pool) got home about midnight in the morning my wife said that about 10 she had got up to go to the toilet felt dizzy could not stand and had to sit on the bed for several minutes she said probably stood up to quickly I Said get dressed got Taxi took her to Hospital Saw an emergency doctor he said nothing to worry about I said I want to see this particular doctor who had treated me big argument even my wife saying I was fussing about nothing Eventually went to the Doctor s dept I think more to keep me quiet and there as my doc was off saw an intern who said my wife should rest and it would be ok I said We were going nowhere until she had an MRI they said not needed I said I am Paying so do it eventually after several hours they gave her a MRI and Bingo it showed a stroke all of a sudden she was admitted given the right treatment etc she is Recovered now. When I saw My Stroke Doc I said she had had a MINI STROKE wow did that annoy her she told me there was no such thing as a MINI stroke . Lesson learnt I suppose it like people saying they are mildly Diabetic. . In Your case it makes you appreciate Doctors who we all moan about and the NHS who can act quickly when needs be.

All thank you for your support and other experiences not to mention the extra reading which I will do shortly.

I'm now just waiting on the MRI and then I'll know where I am. I'm just glad that I went to the doctors.

I'll update soon,
