Painful Cannula's :(

Well, they were the first ones for me - through ignorance / lack of info, rather than choice. After several years of getting bad site reactions (high keloid levels in my skin, which causes scarring, etc.) I discovered that Animas also supplied steel ones; I've scarcely used a nylon one since then.
 
Thanks @ConradJ I didn't get any blood on insertion at all although it was painful, just developed over the day in the tubing, also no blood in the set itself when I removed it, too confusing for me. I wonder if the tenderness and pain could be some kind of infection, sets are tender to touch.Rx

Are you using steel or nylon? If nylon, angled insertion or 90degrees to skin?

Thanks ConradJ I had no blood on insertion just some pain, blood staining came through during the day and no blood in set when I removed it, too confusing for me and I wonder if some kind of infection can be in place causing the tenderness in different areas when sets are inserted but working fine

Hi I have a Medtronic, paradigm pump and use mio sets, the insertion needle is steel as far as I can see, didn't know there was variety until reading other posts here.

You MUST be tired: your reply is there, just above... and I've replied to that reply

What type of cannulas are you using? Steel or nylon, angled or 90 degree to skin? [Scrub that repeat, you've just answered... except:

The insertion needles are steel, but if you then pull that out leaving something in the skin, then you're using nylon.

Steel cannulas look like 6mm syringe needs and only come with a short plastic cover on the tip, which is removed before insertion.
 
Do you get your supplies direct from Medtronic? If so, contact them in the morning and ask what varieties they have and if they can send you samples of each to try out - explain you're getting site issues. They may even be able to recommend another version.

Also, do you clean your skin shortly before insertion? If you insert a new one several hours into the day and long after the morning / evening shower then it's possible you're getting some micrscopic grime in at the time, leading to infections.
