Painful toe?

I am T2, diet controlled.

For a little while now I have experienced a pain at the base of the little toe, topside of the foot. There is nothing visible on the surface of the foot. Genrally (touch-wood) my feet appear to be in good health - ie no blisters, corns, toe-infections etc

It feels as though it is bruised but I haven't knocked it (and there isn't/hasn't been any bruising). The strange thing is that it isn't painful when I touch it and the pain isn't there all the time. The pain seems to come and go. When it comes -it seems to come in waves which last 20 seconds or so.

The pain seems to eminate from the bone but I can't be sure.

Anyone had anything similar? Any ideas/thoughts?

Hi Danny

This sounds very much like some nerve pain to me, tell me do you test your blood sugars and what are your readings like?
Also if you are worried about this it is best to have your feet checked by your nurse/dcotor or make an appointment with a podiatrist just to make sure all is in order.

All the best

Thanks for the reply

My BG figures are quite good. I am eating (relatively) low carb. Typical figures are:

Morning - 5.0/5.5
Post-prandial: 1 hr - 6.5/7.2, 2 - hr - 5.2 /5.6

I will give the foot a short while and if it doesn't improve go get it looked at. It is just very strange - the fact there is nothing visible and that it doesn't actually hurt all of the time.

Hi again Danny

congratulations on such good bg figures!!! Hmmmm I still think that this pain that is on/off and comes in waves lasting a few seconds or so is some kind of nerve pain, like a neuropathy, it is possible that you have some vitamin/mineral deficiency (diabetics are more likely to have deficiencies esp if taking oral medication) but dont go taking a whole load of supplements, check this out with your medical team first.
You could try to add Epsom salts to your bath/footbath and soak a bit in there, then carefully drying your feet and moisturising, Epsom salts are rich in magnesium and this is one mineral that diabetics dont always digest properly, so adding it to your bath water or foot bath will help you to absorb it through the skin, its worth a try?

All the best

A diagnosed diabetic can self-refer to the podiatrists. ring them up and speak to them. they will advise you.

Anything happened further up your leg? Sciatica may cause pains in the extremities from a problem in or near the spine. Something around your knee might be affecting the nerves further down, like carpal tunnel?

No problems higher up the leg.

I have decided to take a break from the treadmill (I only walk briskly, nothing too demanding) for a week and see if that makes a difference. If not I guess I'll have to get it looked at.
