Hi I have type1, been diagnosed for 19 years. I have all the complications that come with it and my kidneys are only working at about 50% now. Does anyone have any advice or know anything, its early days in my pre op stuff and have only had my heart scans. I am only 31 with two beautiful little girls but I am scared stiff! Thanks x

Hi,
I'm 47, have had T1 for some 36 years now and, like you have most of the complications. Iwas put on the Oxford SKP transplant list about 4-5 years ago when my kidney function dropped to about 25%. I had months of tests, which included heart tests and the 4 hour exercise tests at Oxford, where I met the team who all explained the way things would progress. Loads of blood taken...then, a few months later, my function suddenly started to go up again.
Now I have an output of about 40%, no ill effects and I'm off the list! I just see my local renal team every 4-6 months and they keep an eye on things.
However, I have met some post op people during the time, and every one of them is very well and happy since their op. So it isn't something to worry over as far as I can see.
Regards,
Mark

Thank you mark, its good to hear another persons views instead of doctors talking at you. I am now waiting to see my consultant again in july to find out how the heart scans went, I guess I will know more soon!!

I did investigate the pancreas only option, but the Oxford consultant explained that, in cases where the kidney function is reduced, having a pancreas can cause shock to the kidney, resulting in the need for a kidney transplant shortly after a pancreas. So although the diabetes is causing no end of problems, I'm sort of stuck in between the two options - Kidney output is too good for the SKP, but too dodgy for a pancreas only! But I feel good so I guess that's the most important thing.

Hi, Just posted this elsewhere on forum:
Hi I'm 49 and had a kidney/pancreas transplant at Oxford 5 years ago after having being a Type 1 diabetic doe 25 Years. I wasn't that keen to go ahead with everything but decided to take the fatalistic approach, that if I passed all the medical hurdles and suitable organs became available, so be it.
I was on the waiting list for 6 months and was about to be fitted with the appropriate plumbing for pereneal (sp?) dialysis that week, when the transplant call came through just I was part way through my second pint of Pimm's!
I was horribly unwell afterwards but after 4 months I felt that I was finally on the home straight. I spoke to someone from the transplant support group on the phone regularly afterwards which helped. 5 years on, I'm still off insulin and my kidney function is adequate but not perfect (I have over issues apart from diabetes that have affected this).

PS had a very supportive husband for the endless trips to Oxford, and my 2 older boys (16 & 19)looked after their much younger brother (10) (at the time).
