Hello all

My name is Carolyn I am aged 58 earlier this year i was diagnosed with IPMN (Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm of the pancreas) which resulted in my undergoing a total pancreatectomy in April of this year. I have recovered from the op well but of course I am now classed as a type 1 diabetic. I am on the basal/bolus scheme and take Novorapid and Glargene to control my diabetes. I am finding controlling my levels quite difficult lots of highs/lows for no discernable reason!? I would be interested to hear from anyone else who has undergone this operation.

Welcome tamar

I've not had surgery, but I am diabetic. If you are now diagnosed with diabetes after your surgery those highs and lows can be managed with diet - there are many T1s here who use diet to manage their blood glucose as well as use insulin. I'm sure someone will be along presently.

Whatever diet you adopt, a succesful diabetic - one who has good blood glucose control - reduces their carbohydrate intake. Telling us about what you eat might help us to offer some advice you might find useful.

Also, this a very specific thread title for the intro section. You might get more response by reposting or moving this thread to another part of the board :?

Anyway, welcome aboard. Take a look around, ask questions. Loads of great advice and support here.

Hi, I'm type 1 but I think that there are some differences in problems experienced by people that have had pancreatectomies.I don't know if there is anyone on here who has had a similar operation.
Because you have lost your alpha cells as well, you presumably have no counter regulatory response which would lead to problems in control. I also understand that many people after the operation have difficulties in absorbing fat and have to take pancreatic enzymes this may make differences in your dietary needs. ( one type of dietary advice is most definitely not applicable to all)
If you are having problems with sorting out your basal/bolus, perhaps if you post some of your readings in the type 1 forum somebody may be able to spot patterns that could help.
I do know of a child who had her pancreas removed soon after birth. She now uses an insulin pump and I believe that her mother feels it has lead to better control. She posts on another forum and I'll send you a pm about it.

Thanks Spiral and Phoenix for your input. Yes having had a pancreatectomy everything is a bit more complicated. I do take pancreatic enzymes to deal with the fats in my diet. Because of the enzyme issue I am reluctant to take the lo carb route although having said that I do pay close attention to the amount/variety of carbs I consume. I feel that the basal/bolus regime is enabling me to have some control but because of other variables perhaps I will never gain the control intended nevertheless I shall keep on trying to get an even balance.
I shall endeavour to repost this item, hopefully out there is someone going through the same post op scenario. all the best.
