I'm not sure exactly the implications of your diagnosis, but go along with the daily basal and see how the sugar readings go with your meter. Your GP should give you an HBa1C blood test within 3 months which will give both of you a guide on the level of sugar control. If you need more control over meal sugar spikes then the GP may add Bolus (rapid-acting) insulin as my nurse did. Also sometimes splitting the daily Basal into two helps smooth the day. Either way your GP/nurse will be guided by the HBa1C and any measurements he asks you for. He may tweak the 14 units up or down a little bit depending on your morning fasting level. Most of us would be asked to aim for a morning fasting level of between 5 and 7mmol.
