Hi everyone.

My Hubby is a type 1 Diabetic which started when he went into multi organ failure as a child he has since had 2 kidney transplants and is currently on the transplant list for a combined kidney and pancreas transplant,
He is now 35 and has worked as a milkman for many years. A year and a half ago he had to leave work because he progressed to end stage renal failure.

For the last 18 mnths we have been trying to adjust his insulin regime to allow him to lead a more normal lifestle so he can eat at standard mealtimes but to disasterous consequences,
He was seeing 3 seperate diabetic specialists ,one at his GP's one at the renal clinic and the other at manchester diabetic ctr and all gave different advice leaving him in a right state on a regular basis.

This week he has had the worst week with sugar levels going over 30 and no reduction after a 25 units of novarapid 1 1/2 hrs later he collapsed with the machine stating Hi which means the level had increased to over 35... he was taken to A&E and left for 2 hours to where his sugars dropped to 2.2 he was given 1 slice of bare toast by the nurse and his sugars jumped start back up to 15 within 30 mins, once his sugars leveled out 12 hours later he was discharged but he cant cant get an appointment to see any of the clinics for over a week,, his levels r still jumping up n down like crazy wot can we do? Help.....

Hi,

bless you! and your husband, seems like a very rough time you've been having!

Do you have any method of testing for ketones?

If he has high BG's for a long time and has collapsed previously then it would be a good idea to monitor these!

Does he keep a diary of what his readings, how much insulin he is having and what he eats?

If not then it would be a very good idea to do this as when you do get an appointment this can show the up and downs and help pin point problem areas and start to get them sorted out!

Had he been on the DAFNE course? this is a 5 day course that teaches you a method of adjusting your insulin doses according to what you eat and how to correct high BG's and how to deal with illness, exercise..etc. it can be very helpful indeed!

If he has high sugars it may be a good idea to eat meals and snack with foods lower in carbohydrates, so His BG's arent pushed up even further until you can get to an appointment for better advice..

I hope this may help a little and i wish i could help more!

all the best!

Hi

How long has your husband been on the transplant list, kidney/pancreas is normally shortest waiting time, months rather than years.

I had mine 31/12/2006 at Guys in London, its like starting a new life I now have normal kidney and pancreas function no more testing worrying about hypos just a few immunosuppresnts twice a day.

If you want any information on the operation then you can pm me

Regards
