Panic!

Before my dinner earlier I had my Novorapid and gave it in my stomach. It hurt the usual amount going in - nothing major, gave the dose. But when I removed the needle it hurt and there was a blob of insulin and blood! Then I looked at my pen and there was blood on the needle and it looked like some blood had gotten into the insulin pen!! Luckily it was almost empty anyway but I'm pretty freaked out as that's never happened before!!!

Has this happened to anyone else before, what could have been the cause for this?

((Still very very new to this all so appreciate all the help I can get!!))
 

Sofs, I'm not an insulin user myself, so wouldn't like to comment, but I'll tag @Jaylee and @urbanracer and @donnellysdogs who are T1 and are likely to have more clue than me!

Sounds like you've hit a line of blood... it happens occasionally.

I would check bloods tonight as they may go high. Or at least, mine have done so when the same happens to me. I just correct as per my meter and carry on..

Dont forget its a bolus which only lasts 4-6 hours... its more hassle if its a basal jab.

Make sure you change needle and dont panic... if you correct if going high, then by tomorrow morning all the bolus would be out and food and it will be a brand new day to start again..

I wouldnt over correct though, as you dont know how much has gone in to skin.

Hmmmmm. i've made a few mistakes in my time.
here goes the silly questions...

Was this a relatively fresh injection site?
Did you perform an "airshot"?? (Please ask if unsure what an airshot is.)
Was this a new needle?

Yes, yes and yes! That's why I was a bit worried because I did everything correctly as far as I was aware! I have been moving around my belly but maybe it's the same place I did previously another day recently and didn't realise?

Hey, it can occasionally happen.. Not every jab is perfect. Following some basic procedures minimises the hassle.

If you are in a position at home. or maybe lucky enough to wear shorts in the currently nice run of weather in your area? (I'm a guy knowing nothing of skirt or dress fashion, but you get my drift.) to give your "usual spot" in public a rest.? Use a thigh?
 
Yes that is an option, I tried it the other day and it hurt like a ***** I have considered giving it another go though if it'll save my stomach for a few days! Thank you for helping me! Panic over

To be honest... I give my stomach a rest when i dine with my wife at home with the long legged attire.. It's only the leg after all!
Sat at a table in shorts (weather permitting.) what is there to see with a respectable pull up?

The invention of smart phones regarding other diners make 's life easier in a restaurant situation.. ( if you have ever been out on Valentines night? who are these "lovers" talking to? I could put on a full production of the musical Cats, & they wouldn't notice.)

Haha I think my issue is I've got 0 fat on my legs (not that I'm complaining about that) but think that's why it hurts a little more! Will give it another go and see, will soon get used to it I'm sure!
 
To me, if I feel any pain I move need to another place. I've been very lean and muscly with all my body in my 30+ years of injecting-my stomach does not do well with jabs but my legs do!! However, if I push a little on needle in any part of body and its painful even before it gone in a mm, then I move to a place where I dont feel anything.

Getting used to injections and waiting for a flinch of pain may heighten perception.. but for me being a lean, sometimes too skinny, too muscly lady, as a rule I never feel pain if needle goes in well and with ease. My bottom is the truly best place for no pain at all.

Do check your bloods but they are more likely to go high if you hit blood than go low..
