Hi,

I recently joined and, as previous posts on being a newbie parent, looking for moral support.

My daughter is 11 years old and we are struggling to come to terms with her being diabetic. She was diagnosed in December and it was an extremely scary time. She had glandular fever (which we didn't realise) and so many other things going on, including severe weight loss.

My daughter also suffers from a rare genetic condition that also affects how she manages her condition.

Have to admit to being really overwhelmed and feeling out of my depth with it all. We had a recent scare where she had too much insulin and ended up spending 4 days in hospital to recover.

Thanks

A very worrying and difficult time for you! :( I don't have the experience to advise you sadly but I'm Bumping your post up in the hope that someone in a similar position to you can share their experiences with you!

My best wishes to you and your family

Paul

Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm very sorry to hear about your daughter. Those first few months after diagnosis can be very challenging for both you and your daughter and sometimes it can seem like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. I am pleased to say that things do get better and as you gain knowledge you will be able to understand the illness more and be able to manage your daughter to get tighter control.

I would speak to your DSN about going on a carb counting course if you haven't already. Your DSN should also be able to make a referral to your daughters health visitor about dealing with the other issues surrounding her deAling with the condition.

I have always found this site invaluable in terms of not only getting some excellent advice, but getting the support and understanding from other diabetics and parents who go through the same things on a daily basis.
