I went out for lunch today and thought I'd chosen sensibly. Had a really bad headache afterwards but didn't have my meter. 5 hours later I was 8.2 so dread to think what it went up to. I logged my lunch on my fitness pal and was horrified to discover the parsnips I had were 40g carbs and the coffee was 12 g carbs on their own without the rest of my lunch ( which was ok) I thought I was quite savvy about food but just goes to show you

Not had tea yet and already blown the carb and calorie count for today

Just to check I've put my goals correctly into myfitnesspal - how many grams of carbs, fat, protein should I be aiming for ( or percentages) I'm trying to go quite low carb moderate fat ( epic fail today!)

I loooove parsnips, mashed with cream and black pepper, roast with honey and garlic, curried, souped... Even boiled :woot:

But I'm afraid I might as well mainline glucose syrup.

I feel your pain.

(You can sort the coffee by just tipping in double cream )

Hi,

Just realised you asked about proportions of carbs, etc.

If you go to the bloodsugar101 link in my sig, and then
click Diet
click Nutritional Calculator
click to open the calc

(sorry, can't post a link direct to the page, for some reason)

then you can work out what you need to eat to lose or maintain weight, based on the number of carbs you want to eat.

(I worked out my current carb consumption using MyFitnessPal, which gave me a very good indication)

Well that explains my higher than normal readings, I have had roasted parsnips for lunch and dinner.

I love roast parsnips .. But just being in the same room as a parsnip will raise my sugar levels through the roof !

I rarely have parsnips as hubbie doesn't like them but I have them when we go to other people's houses. But shan't from now on! Wow!

Just a bit of a disclaimer to say I got the carb count from MFP and another very sensible poster urged caution as nutrient info on MFP is member submitted and can be inaccurate.

Nevertheless they obviously don't suit me so will avoid them. If I can avoid milk chocolate* then parsnip avoidance should be a breeze!!!

*sigh

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO yes roast parsnip yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, well I will have one with my turkey at Chritmas, I don't care if its just a scrap of parsnip with the first forkful of turkey, just have to have it.

Missed you!

Aww really. been popping in and out as I got a few seconds to do so, as I've been babysitting neighbours grandchild whilst grandparents stay with mum in hospital, ruptured appendix nasty but now on the mend,

Well, you need to kindly and gently point out that she should be getting better soon.
We need you here!
Languishing never did anyone any good. ;)

My neighbours are lovely and have in the past been there when I needed help getting to and from the hospital when Mr Satindoll had his heart attack, and the little lad is so well behaved and says please and thank you, so it would be rather churlish to not help if I can, but babysitting duties will end on Friday as mum is due to come home then with the district nurse calling in daily.
On another note has your pooch managed to cope with the time change, my old girl Topaz is finding it hard to wait the extra hour for her food, bless, I'm sure she didn't have this problem last year, still we will persevere.
Not languishing honest.

Sorry didn't mean to hijack your thread Sam

Hi @Sam72,

Although you mention parsnips you don't say what you actually ate.

A small portion of parsnips in a meal with other low carb foods may not have shown such a rise. It's a bit like people being able to eat a couple of new potatoes/roast potatoes with a roast dinner.
If you had consumed parsnip soup then you would expect a rise but a combination of foods is a better way to try something.

It's the same with fruit. Eat it as a dessert and it will not spike so much but eat it as a snack and it will give a higher reading.

I'm only guessing what you ate and parsnips may be a no no for you but not for everybody.

On the halloween note my local farm shop has a beautiful display of pumpkins and autumn veg. Anyone tried pumkin and what do you do with it. Is it a no no on lchf?
