Hi, not sure if this has been spoken about, nothing came up in the search bar.
I love having my nails done, although ever since I was diagnosed I’m obsessed about my feet and being careful.
The problem is I’m going on holiday and really want my toe nails done (pedicure) want to look nice in my sandals instead of my boring toes poking out looking boring.
So my question is, can us type 1s have them done, does anyone have theirs done?
Thanks

I’m T2 diet controlled and I get a luxury pedicure with gel nails every 3-4 weeks without any problems, in fact it keeps my feet in tip top condition. I see no reason why you shouldn’t have your nails and feet done as long as you have no diabetic complications pertaining to your feet such as neuropathy etc.

Gel nails have recently had bad press. Acrylic dust inhalation is toxic. It is mainly the people doing home DIY kits and nail parlour operatives, not the punters. There are changes to the HSE guidelines regarding ventilation and exposure, but if you go to a reputable outlet it should already be in place. Not your problem it seems.

I get gel nails on my fingers and toes, there’s no acrylic in them - that’s a different thing, again I don’t see any reason why not if your feet and nails are healthy

Commuting, overcrowded spaces, especially after the arrival of covid-19...
When living in SE Asia I regularly had luxury pedicures finishing off with gel nails. Only problem I encountered was ripping the nail bed and losing the nail on a big toe when doing burpees working out (bouncing on end of toes). But mostly fine - I have slight peripheral neuropathy, but still full skin sensation. Just keep a close eye on the nail technician and ideally push not trim cuticles, don't be aggressive on calluses.

I don't think diabetes Type is the problem, but it could be a problem for diabetics in general

The allergic reaction can apparently lead to reaction against insulin pumps and CGM. It may be the Wail is overegging it, but they are not the only ones reporting this.

Hmm the Daily Fail, not saying it isn’t happening but I’m not sure how common it is, I’ve been getting my nails done with acrylic and gel polish for 15 odd years, stopped the acrylics during lock down because I had no choice lol - now only get gel, been getting it on my toes for about 10 years, never had any problems- in fact I feel that it actually helps my nails on my feet as I have psoriasis which can make your nails curl and lead to ingrown nails and the gel seems to keep them straight
