Hi,

I know there are many questions about eyes on here, I guess it's one of the biggest worries as a diabetic... Anyway, I haven't had my eyes tested at the opticians for a few years (oops) and I know I need a new prescription, but over the past couple of weeks my eyes seem to be really blurry, almost like they were when I was diagnosed a year ago with blood sugar at 27+. Today they seem worse than ever and I'm a bit worried about driving. My blood sugar is relatively stable - it averages at about 6 - but I do get spikes (8 or 9) after meals which I'm working on. I had the retinopathy test in the winter and it was all fine. My HBA1c is 5.8. Is it common to suffer with blurry eyes like this or do I simply need new specs?

Thank you

I would start at the optician's and tell them you are diabetic when you make the appointment. Specsavers were great with me and did check for retinopathy and did a periferal test too. Optometrists are trained to spot trouble, should there be anything and they will tell you if you need more testing.

Hi Hanadr,

Thanks for the info - will get my eyes checked asap. Do I need a letter from my doctors to show the opticians when I book the appointment?

Jessie.

hya jessie,
you dont need a letter, i go to specsavers and they are very thorough :D good luck

Some opticians have fantastic new camera technology, years ahead of what the eye hospital use, at least here in Bristol. With no need for drops to dilate the pupils either! I get a 3D picture of the retinal surfaces whenever I go, I love my optician :D
