Pernicious Anaemia

Morning all.

I was at docs yesterday for some blood test results and have been diagnosed with pernicious anaemia. I can live with the 3 monthly injections (although for the first fortnight they are every three days  ) but was interested to hear that this condition often emerges after people are diagnosed with Diabetes.

There isn't a heck of a lot I can do about diet because this is an absorption problem but was wondering if anyone else has it or has heard of the connection with Diabetes?

Ta muchly :)

Hi LB

My dad has had it for years, he is not Diabetic...infact he has had half his pancreas removed due to Acute pancreatitis caused by a blockage in his Gall bladder..that went too, and he has not got Diabetes, lucky thing...his Pancreas has regenerated itself . Henhad a scan on it and the Sonographer said he now ,years later has a " normal" pancreas  So the pancreas apparently is like the liver and can regenerate with care..amazing eh??

Sorry I digress, I was told Pernicious Anemia was an autoimmune condition, can I ask what symptoms you had?

Hiya FS

I didn't have any symptoms as such. I had a general blood test including the hba1c and then got a call from the surgery saying that I needed a another more specific test as my B12 levels were showing as extremely low.

I went for the second test not giving it another thought (there are sometimes minor errors that happen at labs) but when I went in yesterday to talk about an unrelated matter, he told me the second test had come back showing that I definitely have pernicious anaemia.

This was the same way my diabetes was diagnosed, a general blood test when they were looking for something else..now the same thing has happened again!

I think that the next time they want to test my blood, I am going to say..NO!! I will probably get a diagnosis of galloping lurgy or something..

Here's some info for anyone interested http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/fac ... miab12.htm

Ladybird - I have pernicious anaemia, also diagnosed via random blood test, was told that its due to long time use of Metformin and long term of uncontrolled Blood sugara.
I dont think I had any symptoms at the time, I felt generally pretty rotten anyway. I have VitB12 jabs every 3 months. I just forget about this condition now, at one time I freaked out as I read that having pernicious anaemia means having an increased risk of stomach cancer. I eat healthy foods, veg, berries, protein, etc, time is too short to worry about whether I am going to get stomach cancer or not.

Hope you are alright.
Best Wishes to you

Most males on my dads side of hw family all have this, my dad and brother both diagnosed within a months of each other. Ive been told theres a good chance il develop it as well, as diabetics im sure we can cope with an extra injection every 3montha lol.xx

Wow, the more they the more they find!

I'm part of that club, a bladder complaint led to this dam Diabetes and Endometeriosis.

I think it's better to have a diagnosis than go through each day wondering why you feel ill all the time.

Good luck with your treatments.
