Phobia of Needles.

Hi Everyone.

I am new so please be gentle with me, lol. Basically yesterday my parter had his eyes tested and found out that he 98% chance he has diabetes, which he is absolutely terrified and really upset, scared about. He has a total phobia of needles, he only goes to the dr when he absolutely needs to as he is really scared incase they put a needle in him. He can't watch it on tv when someone has a needle in them, even if you talk about the needles, he goes funny. And he certainly wont have an injection whats so ever.

My question to you, has any of you have a total phobia of needles, and how did you cope with the diabetes, and how did you combat, the phobia.

Hi shygirl and welcome.

Before your boyfriend panics too much, wait to find out what type of diabetes he may have. Not all diabetics have to inject you know. Good luck.

I have type 2, I don't inject, but because i have had 3 pulomonary embolisms, i have to have weekly blood tests!
Talk about phobia's the minute i saw a needle i would faint! I am being honest i would!
The minute the word blood test is mentioned that was it i would go spark out!
I taught myself with the help of a good friend that i don't have to be affraid! the worst pain is the going in of the needle and when it comes it!
Okay so when i needed blood tests my friend would attend and take my mind off the needle even by telling jokes or by talking to me!
stupid thing is over the past ten years now i attend blood tests and it does not matter buit my whole childhood forget it!
what i am trying to say with a little gentle encouragement from you! And the holding of his hand he can and will get through the testing!
The worst bit is knowing that the needle is there! But with someone to take your mind off it is a hell of alot better and easier to cope with what is going happen!
 
I also have an 'issue' with needles.

when I first went to be tested a couple of weeks ago, I thought the test was a blood test to start with, but it was a urine test. This calmed me down.

I then found out that I had to go back the following day for a 'proper' blood test. Spent the day and night panicking. Asked the first nurse what to do, and she said lie down as it would be better.

I have to say, being 35 years old, and the last blood test I had was 30 years ago, I lay there expecting the worst.

The 100% truth is, when I was told there would be a sharp scratch, I waited for it, when it came it was FINE. A minute or so later, I was told it was finished, and was amazed at how simple the whole process was.

I expect to be as nervous next time, but please, beleive me it is not that bad.

Many thanks for all of replies. Its not the pain that he is worried about it is the needle, even on tv he has to close his eyes or looks away. We have a foreign holiday coming up in the next 5 weeks, so I think he is going to wait until then. I know people will say, go now, don't wait, but I think he has made up his mind. He thinks it might cause more trouble on holiday, to get things sorted, what happens if he is very ill, etc etc, and he doesnt want to ruin, his or anyones holiday.

I wasn't needle phobic until I came across an incompetent phlebotomist, now I tell them each time and "cope"
 
If he is getting stressed about this now and is not even Diabetic this is something you need to have dealt with by a Professional.

All the advice you get on here is in general terms. Most of us are not Medical Experts. We may be expert in our own condition.

Get a referral from the Gp to someone who can address the problem and help him. The longer you leave it the worse the problem will get.
