Hi

I wanted to be daft and have a piercing for my 40th but never got round to it.

I now have the nerve to go get this done, but would value the advice from other diabetics who have had the nerve to get a piercing despite the risk of possible complications.

Has any one had a real bad reaction to a piercing?

Has any one found it straight forward with no compications.

Please let me know either way then I dan way up the options and either run a mile again or go for broke and get it done.

It depends a bit on which part of your anatomy you want pierced. :twisted:
If you just want a belly botton or an ear, Make sure you go to a reliable place and keep your Blood Glucose at around 5 TIGHTLY. That should ensure you heal at normal speed. then follow a sensible hygiene protocol.. It's up to you wheher you choose to tell whoever's going to do it. Piecings inside the mouth and nose are more prone to infection. and in my Over-the Hill point of view, more intimate piercings are inappropriate and daft.
 
i have many piercing's ranging from normal to below the belt so to speak..

the main thing is to make sure you keep the piercing afterwards as clean as humanly possibly....simple salt baths (egg cup boiled water and a pinch of salt) twice a day and provisional cleaning around it has always worked for me, i wont get either piercing's or tattoo's if my sugars are a bit funky though...

I have no interest in body piercing etc. However , I do hope you all consider the facts if you are a Diabetic. I won't give links as they can be a bit "adult"! The sites can be a bit scary if piercing isn't your thing :shock:

Body Modification Ezine is an excellent information resource, but not for the faint-hearted! and a UK site Body Jewellery Shop dot com has lots of info and shows you all the goodies you can buy. Not as scary as BME!

Hygiene is the key. If you wouldn't be prepared to eat your dinner off the floor, don't get your piercing done there. Research before you go shopping for your piercer. Ask you pierced mates where they got theirs done.

A long term health condition is no barrier to body modification, I don't intend to let my diabetes stop me from getting another tattoo when I'm ready (I have 2, both custom pieces).

Aftercare is everything and if you are unwell or are having any issues with healing DON'T DO IT!

The horror stories are related to poor hygiene and aftercare.

Thanks all for your input.

I am thinking definitley above the belt, but below the neck as per Billy Connerly.

I undestand that good control is essential and hygeneic after care is essential.

I dont know of any mates who have a piercing so I am unable to ask there advice on the subject.

I suspect I need to get my control a lot tigher than I have it at the moment as most of my cuts and scratches seem to take forever to heal sepecial the extrmities.

When I speak to the dibetic Nurses they all advice against both tattos and piercings but I feel quite rebelious at the moment and must take the consequencies due to my own actions.
