hi there, my father is learning to fly but is taking gliclazide (along with MET) and after consulting with a doctor connected to the civil aviation chaps was advised he could not get a licence while on that drug. i wondered what it is about that drug that meant it was unsuitable for pilots, and whether there was an alternative that did the same job but did not prevent being a pilot. many thanks in advance!

Hi chousaru,

The problem with glicazide is that you can have hypoglycaemic episodes when taking it. Not ideal for someone in charge of a plane.

Your father needs to discuss alternatives with his G.P. as nobody here knows his medical history and is not qualified to answer this.
Hope this helps and hope someone who has been in this situation will come along and advise you as to the outcome for them.
