Pins and Needles/Diabetic Neuropathy

Hello All,

Quick question that i'm sure has been asked hundreds of times before but i think i need to ask it to get some kind of idea if i'm being totally silly or not.

Right.... Not diabetic (as far as i know) had a fasting blood test 2 months ago for a seperate reason they thought might be diabetes but bloods came back fine and i have no other symptoms.

However about 1 month or so later i started getting pins and needles in the skin/muscle around the front/side of knees, this would sometimes go into my thighs as well. It lasted about 4 weeks but then went away.

About 2 weeks ago i stated getting very intermittant prickling/burning feelings in my shin and they have now progressed into the top of my feet and fingers/arms. They are by no means there all the time and they only last seconds and come and go throughout the day, but doing the old internet search led me to see problems with nerves and diabetes.

Am i correct in thinking that if my bloods were fine 2 months ago that it would be unlikely that i have suddenly developed diabetes and this has effected my nerves already?

Dr seems to think i have done something to my back or it is an anxiety issue.

Sorry for rambling...

Would appreciate thoughts.

Oh by the way not asking for diagnosis.... i'm aware that for a definitive answer i must go to my gp.

I've always been told any problems would start in my toes, but then that advice was from doctors so ignorant about diabetes they misdiagnosed what type I had so I'm not sure how accurate it is!
Ask for another fasting blood test if you are worried?

As you say yourself, we do not diagnose on the Forum. Therefore as this could be any of a myriad of things I suggest you discuss with your GP or a specialist for a definitive answer.

Hi. Was not asking for a diagnosis, was merely asking in peoples experience does neuropathy normally happen soon after being diabetic or usually after years of uncontrolled blood sugerr. Merely a question.

Neuropathy is something that can happen to anybody........you do not have to be a Diabetic. Only when it is caused by Diabetes is it termed Diabetic Neuropathy. It is not normal at any time and being Diabetic is no reason why you should think that you will get Neuropathy, it can develop after a period of high Bg levels but no one can tell you how and when that might happen. The aim is only to keep Bg levels down so that none of the possible complications can manifest themselves.

The answer I gave you is my considered opinion. That hasn't changed. I could give you a huge list of causes of Neuropathy, there would be very little point as many of them are not diabetes related.

Speaking personally some years ago I had a cervical spinal injury, this paralysed me for a short time and since then because of the injury I am left with instances of pins and needles, tingling etc in my arms/hands/fingers. I am a Diabetic but this is not Diabetic Neuropathy as it was caused by an accident.

Therefore as I previously stated....get a referral or discuss it with your GP. See if you can get a scan to pinpoint what exactly is going on. Not everything is down to Diabetes !

Cheers ken. Much appreciated. Had my bloods done today after fasting and was 5.5 so that's good. Only reason I thought it might be diabetes related was because of my gp mentioned that i might have it because of various symptoms. Just a case of ruling things out to find the actual cause.
