Pizza on the pump

I seem to be having big issues with takeaways on the pump. No matter how I bolus my BG is spot on 4-5 hours later so I go to bed and wake up with BG around 17

Tonight my brother wants to order pizza with us and I'm wondering how you would all handle pizza? maybe some tips will help me crack this as, although I don't eat takeaways often, I would like to be able to treat myself sometimes!!

That's a lot of carbs, have you tried a long combo to keep the levels down during the night.
I think it takes the body a while to burn pizzas etc

Well tonight I'm trying a combo with 40% straight up and 60% over 3 hours plus a temp basal of 120% for 4 hours

Will see what my B is before bed and then maybe do a further temp basal. Always worry about night hypos though so might bite the bullet and do BG check at 3 am

Hia - hw dd you get on with the test with the Pitzza? Hope it worked for you.

Well it worked the other way this time. BG after 4 hours was 11.2 so bolused again. Then set a temp basal of +30% for 4 hours and went to bed. Woke up at 4.5 so very happy with that!!

I didn't bolus quite as much as normal upfront as I downloaded the carb details from Pizza Hut's website. I think maybe I should have used this as a guide but still been a little more aggressive with my insulin amount.

I also found some diabetic research into pizza, as it causes all diabetics nightmares with BG, which said that pizza raises BG levels for 8 hours after eating but sugars don't normally start to rise until 2 hours in.

Maybe a bigger start bolus would have worked.
Still it's a good end result!

I do extended over 3 hours but always do around 20% more than the carbs say on the packet! I always think the topping can affect early results and the bread/cheese the later results (post 2 hours+).

Pizzas always ticky but as its only every now and then I'm not too concerned if I need to manually correct after a few hours.

I think its quite personal in what you need to do.

When I eat pizza which isn't enough  I have a shot of insulin in my arm, the amount depends on size of pizza and if I've ordered sides!! garlic bread/wedges etc.... I then run my pump at 50% more basal for about 8 hours. Usually things aren't too bad.

I don't always get it right, but I find that a dual-wave bolus plus 1 to 1.5 units (15-20%) of insulin more than I would normally have for the carb amount works for me most of the time. I usually eat half a shop bought pizza (42gr carb) + a yoghurt (17 gr carb) 61 gr carb total. My ratio at dinner time is 1u/9gr carb. I therefore take 8 units in total (6.8 the usual amount plus an extra 1.2), 6 immediately & 2 units extended over 1.5 to 2 hours.
I've no idea why I have to up my ratio when I eat pizza, but it's the only way to avoid highs later on.
