How can you get rid of recurring pneumonia? Last year my mother had both pneumonia and MRSA pneumonia and is currently on a ventilator. We were told the MRSA would always stay in her body. Now an xray has shown she has pneumonia again, but we can't tell which kind without a culture. Is there anything she can do to help prevent pneumonia from constantly coming back?

Unfortunately there is nothing you or she can do. One of the problems with being in bed for a long time is pneumonia. My father has had it twice within the last 6 weeks purely due, according to the doctor, of being in hospital and being unable to get out of bed. Sorry.

I have a grandmother who had a lot of pneumonias. She had lung physiotherapy and one of the elements was a PEP Valve also. It is a sort of 'whistle' that you exhale into and it creates a pressure against your lungs, helping to loosen up mucus etc.

You may want to investigate or inquire about this - it is meant to be used 3-4 times a day for about 10-20 deep breaths and although I don't have the scientific data, I can see how having less mucus etc sat still in your lungs can help prevent an infection from growing.

You can google 'Positive Expiratory Pressure' and see if that looks like something you would want to consider.

neepaexy Welcome to the forum.

I am sorry to hear that your Mum is not so well. I think MIleana's suggestion is excellent, all I wold add is that you need to find ways of boosting your Mum's immune system.
Eat as healthy as you possibly can, that means home cooked foods, no additives/chemicals, if she is not low carbing then keep carbs sensibly low.
Sending you a couple of links to get you started, see what you think, but I'd say that real home made life kefir would be a good start. I am saying this because my sister caught the MRSA virus whilst in hospital, she consulted a naturopath who recommended kefir.
