I have started to have a bowl of porridge at bedtime to stop my liver dumping. Should I be taking some Humulin S to cover this?
My morning sugars are improving, they have come down from 13-19 to 8-9.

Hi Lorna

It would probably be worth taking some Humalin to cover that. Probably a good idea if you are able to take any readings during the night to make sure it won't make you hypo.

Thanks Robert

The reason I am having the porridge is because my BS was dropping to 2.5/3.5 between 2am and 3am

Do you think the night time drop was caused by the evening Levemir or Humalin?

If you don't want to adjust those, then maybe less porridge?

To be honest Robert i didn't want to start the porridge! My nurse told me to start having it to prevent my overnight lows, she was against me reducing my insulin, not sure why! I was assuming it is the Levemir causing the lows as the last Humulin S I have is approx 17:30. I am desperately trying to lose weight so i would much rather reduce insulin than eat porridge. I did reduce my Levemir as well as start the porridge and that seems to be working, perhaps I shall reduce again. Can it be Humulin S causing my drop?

Hi Lorna

The Humalin S should have finished 5-7 hours after you take it so it's probably not that. If you reduce the Levemir you'll be higher in the morning. I'd be trying for a half measure of porridge as long as that keeps your night BG from going too low.

I'm surprised she hasn't advised you to reduce your basal insulin rather than load up with carbs before bed

It seems to me that if you reduce your Levemir then you wouldn't go low overnight which is maybe what causes your morning highs. I guess you've kind of proved it by having the porridge, avoiding the lows and waking up with better blood sugars! I would definitely question why she's advising you to eat rather than reducing your insulin :)
