Sugar Ray

I registered with a new doctor because I've moved into a new area and the nurse did a health check up on me. She put some strips in a urine sample I gave her and found some protein in there but she said no sugar was in there, said she was sending it off for analysis and that they'd contact me if they found anything. They haven't contacted me. this was last month.

She asked me if diabetes ran in my family and this got me concerned so i bought a glucometer with strips. fasting sugars have been normal but 1 hour post meal sugars have been high. I've been getting readings as low as 8.6 and high as 10.6 one hour after eating some foods, most of the values where in the 9's. Most of the time the two hour values have been below 7.8 but I have had values in the 9's and 8's. I ate a chip butty the other day and the value was 11.2.

Could i be diabetic or have some sort of insulin resistance? Fasting glucose is anything from 5 to 5.5 though I did get 6.2 this morning. I'm going to make another appointment with the doctor.

Sugar will only spill over into urine when blood sugar is very high, so the negative here does not exclude diabetes.

Given your readings, a diabetes spectrum (impaired glucose tolerance or type 2) disorder seems plausible enough - from your use of "most of the time" i assume that you get readings > 7.8 occasionally, which would suggest IGT; however, diagnostic criteria are in terms of OGTT results so it's a bit difficult to interpret without knowing what, and how much, you eat.

The 11.2 mmol/l reading points to T2 as one or two random BG tests > 11.1 are sufficient to diagnose diabetes.
