Helo everyone, new to the group. I have been a type 1 diabetic for six years now, for the past few months I noticed my vision was becoming blurry, I was pregnant and I have a 3 weeks baby boy now. I was struggling with low blood sugars most of the time bcz I was trying to keep a tight control. In my first and last trimester I experienced pins and needles so I wasn't sure whether it was caused by diabetes or pregnancy, but I also told my endo about it and he suggested we wait till I have given birth and see how it goes, but towards the end of the pregnancy there were no pins and needles and I am feeling them now again weeks after birth. The vision is still blurry but it gets worse with low blood sugars and anything around 10. I have also experienced numb hands lately. I did go to see an eye specialist and he told me there is nthn serious, my vision is affected by my sugar levels being too low or very high(anything from 10). Izit possible to get pins and needles as well as neuropathy with controlled blood sugar? I am still not sure whether it's caused by pregnancy or diabetes, I never had all this in my first pregnancy so it's confusing and frustrating .

Welcome @Tsitsi2010 and congratulations on the birth of your baby

I can't answer your questions about your eyes and the pins and needles, but I will say that I found my recent pregnancy affected my focus a little, and also the lows can make your vision weird, pregnant or not. If you've had your eyes checked then you did the right thing and I hope that reassured you. I had pins and need,es in my hands in my first pregnancy but not in my recent 3rd pregnancy. I don't know if it's common. I'm going to,tag some pregnant or recently given birth ladies to see if they can help @Mrsass @1Sarah1 @jade88 @Elc1112 @ArtemisBow

I'm going to move your thread to the Type 1 section so you can get more answers. If you haven't seen anyone about your pins and needles, maybe that would be a sensible thing to do, but go easy on yourself. Your body will still be recovering from pregnancy and birth. Every diabetic mum her knows how hard pregnancy can be. It sounds like you did a really good job controlling your sugars, so be proud and enjoy your little son

Thank you very much @azure will go through the tags right now. My endo told me to wait abit just to see if there is gonna be a change after birth, then he will look into everything then, it's jst that not knowing wats wrong and having to wait can be very scary, and enxiety is the issue as well....

When did you see the eye specialist and what type of specialist was it? Was it an ophthalmologist?

In the UK, women should have their eyes screened for diabetic retinopathy as soon as possible after booking with the midwife (around 10 weeks) and then again at 28 weeks (with an extra screen at 20 weeks for anyone who has background retinopathy). After delivery, they should have another screen within 6 months.

Blurring can occur due to diabetes affecting the retina (diabetic retinopathy) but it can also occur due to factors affecting the lens or the cornea. Changes in blood sugars levels alter the way the lens focuses light and can cause temporary blurring until the levels stabilise. As long as your examination was a dilated examination by someone who is qualified to grade diabetic retinopathy and as long as you have had your eyes examined at the right intervals by qualified examiner, the blurring is unlikely to be due to retinopathy.

Make sure you have your post-delivery retinopathy check within 6 months.

I did see an ophthalmologist a week back he did all the screening and he is gonna send a report to my endo. Will dffntly go bck in six months. Thank you @Darkhorse

Well, if baby is 3 weeks old and retinopathy check was 1 week ago, then I guess that counts as your post-delivery check and if no suspicion of anything wrong, annual screening might be advised.
