Possible type 2 diabetes

Hi everyone

I have been reading this forum for a few days, finding it extremely informative.

The background is I had a tooth extraction and deep clean about 5 weeks ago. I went back last week for a check up to see how I am healing. The majority of my teeth are looking good but the two back corners were still bleeding when he prodded them, so he started me on some antibiotics. The dentist said I should go and get tested for diabetes as that might explain why they were still bleeding. I have no other symptoms of diabetes.

I was 10 stone overweight, have been intensively exercising with a personal trainer over the last 5 months and have lost 5 stone and over 40 inches. I am following a healthy eating, generally low carb diet.

I bought a blood gluclose monitor and my fasting overnight reading was 4.2.

I will need to go to my Doctor I know, but I don't have the best relationship with the surgery at present due to ongoing issues with my Father.

What is confusing me is whether the diet, weightloss and exercise could mask that I have diabetes. So if I get tested by my Doctor and it comes back reasonable, i am worried I might still have diabetes. Is that possible or am I just confusing myself?

I don't really want to come off my diet and stop exercising if at all possible as I am doing so well.

Any advice appreciated!

Hi, Welcome

Firstly....wow what awesome progress you have already made! well done

if you are eating low carb and exercising as you are then yes your bg could indeed be hiding the fact that you have db, my bg numbers from finger prick testing is often the same as yours, what you do about this is another matter, why not do an experiment, eat something high carb or drink some lucozade and test your bg each half hour afterwards, if your bgs stay within range that has to be a good sign, if the doctor did a hba1c test which tests your bg over the last 3 months that could also show you to be not diabetic, my hba1c shows my bgs in non diabetic range, the problem with this is you wont get tested for other possible side effects of db like eyes feet etc. but apart from that if you did indeed have db and your bgs are under control your not at risk of developing this stuff if you havent already so just keep doing what your doing and db or no db its all good, what harms a diabetic is high sugars in the blood so if your sugars arent high you are all good, the way you are living is how we should all be living anyway so you have nothing to lose by carrying on, hehe easy to say right, i believe there are other tests that would prove it one way or the other but it sounds like people with terrible symptons cant get that test so i doubt you will, anyway this is just all opinion, i have no medical background.

very best of luck

andy

best of luck either way

Hi, again well done on weight loss and healthy changes you've made in your life so far ( could so with some motivation my way haha) I love Andy idea with lucozade and testing, just make sure your fasted prob best to so first thing in morning, and try not do a intense exercise the night before incase it has lowering effect on sugars, i would always encourage speaking to your doctor about concerns you have if nothing else to rule it out.

Thanks both for your replies.

I will try the Lucozade test and see what happens. Will wait until a week on Monday after my next weigh in!

The one thing that puzzles me is that the dentist said that uncontrolled diabetes can cause problems with gum disease and healing. Everything I have read emphasises that the diabetes causes a problem when blood sugar levels are left high, but even if I have it - it is possible I am controlling the levels with my new lifestyle changes and weight loss. So this should mean the diabetes might not be causing the issue. Hmmm, lots of food for thought.

Thanks again.

unfortunatly not all the damage it does can be undone so i wouldnt rule it out it would be wonderful if we could undo years of the wrong things with months of the right

there is a post somewhere on here that explains how to do the lucozade properly i think it is called a glucose tolerance test or something like that but it wont be very scientific and id still advise trying the doctor route

Thanks again!

Sorry I wasn't suggesting any damage could be undone, but rather that the healing should not be affected by the diabetes if blood sugar levels are under control (or at least that is what he said).

Off to look for the test now.

nah, if damage has been done to small capillaries supply blood and therefore oxygen to your gums, it dosent matter what your recent bgs are like as i understand it, others will know better

i can find it on google but its from other forums and i dont want to be killed in my sleep for copy pasting it so have a search for "glucose tollerance test at home" you should find something

Yes, have found it. It looks relatively simple, but both pages say carbs need to be upped to at least 150g for the 3 days preceding the test. I will definitely wait until after my next weigh in which is only 9 days away.
