Hello! T1 diabetic.

Could anyone help me on the issue of post meal spikes? My control is very good ( Last HB1AC was 40, I also have a Freestyle Libre sensor )

What I've noticed is that my BS is sometimes spiking high after meals and falling quickly ( not all the time, but some )

I know it's a lot to do with the GI content of food and other factors, but do any other pump users have advice? ( I have an Omnipod )

I want to try and limit the amount of post meal spikes I'm having.

Are there any good low GI books available?

Thanks!

Hi @CurlyJ! I use mendosa.com. He was an American science writer and he has lists of GI and GL values for food brands in most countries.
You have not mentioned what insulin you Omnipod uses.
I find that with my Novorapid (with an Animas pump) that there are two situations where high post meal spikes are more common:
one is after breakfast and I figure that I sometimes need to increase my Novorapid dose 20 to 30 % or so particularly if my waking BSLS is in the 8 to 11 mmol/l range AND take the Novorapid 1/2 to one hour before eating. That seems to 'line up' the sugar spike better with the peak action of the Novorapid (which is about 3 hours after injection) AND THE EXTRA ALLOWS FOR WHAT MAY BE SOME INCREASED RESISTANCE (WHAT NOT SURE WHY).
two: I find that doses from the last 20 units of insulin in my pump do not seem as effective as equivalent doses earlier in the reservoir's supply. It may be that there is some wear in the thread of the screw as it drives the insulin out of the reservoir into the tubing/under the skin etc and thus the programmed dose is not delivered. I try to change reservoirs before the 20 unit mark to avoid this. However timing is not perfect.
I hope that helps !!
