Hi All .

PPG - stands for Patient Participation Group .

At my own GP surgery the patients are allowed to form and be involved in
their own Patient Paticipation Group .

I am on the commitee of our PPG .
I have explained to the commitee I have a special interest with 'diabetes issues' for all patients.
We are allowed to voice and discuss 'ANY' issues a patient may have in our surgery , local community ,
and local chemist's/pharmacy's .
Given the chance to improve things for all patients living near by .
All debate's and discussion's are minuted , written down by our surgerys secretary .
They will be presented to the GP's to look at and discuss .
Any action agreed, progress needed or decided is presented to the commitee at our next meeting .

I personally find this is a great opportunity to help other patients using our surgery and the local chemist/pharmacy .
With the local community issues they will be referred to via the local council/police/fire brigade/ambulance services
if needed or warranted.

I have posted this to let you know this is available in 'some areas' ...
As its a new thing - some areas do offer this - others maybe not yet .
Ask at your own GP's surgeries about this - it is a great opportunity to help
improve things within your own surgery, chemist , community.

Anna.

I just applied to join ours. I don't go to the health centre often, but I saw the poster when I went for my eye screening last week. I also stated that my interest is in diabetes matters. In addition, I volunteered to chair meetings if needed. I have done that sort of thing in my working life.

I joined the local PPG and attended one meeting.

I assumed it was a bottom up exercise where the patients provided feedback to the surgery and refined the way the organisation operated. I this belief I sent a brief to the secretary outlining the three items I wished to raise. I received a reply that they had a perfectly good complaints procedure and I should follow that instead.

I went to a meeting. I met a friend there and she was there for the first time also. I told her that although I thought it was a feed back group originally I now thought of it as an indoctrination exercise.

The meeting consisted of a health official explaining the health service reforms. I still don't understand those and I am not convinced that he did.

Of the other members present, all but three admitted to an interest in that they were employees of the health service or ex employees of the health service.

The three that were not employees etc. were me, my friend and a very nice lady who fell over the table and left early because she had remembered where she hid the vodka. ( I know her and she will not take offence)

That PPG is a farce.
