Ok .. am so confused as a prediabetic .. tonight i took reading prior to eating it was 6.3 ..reading 2hrs after i ate was 6.5 ... what are NORMAL reading for non diabetic.. what should i be aiming for .. am trying to turn this around ..have been walking, have lost weight and as per bmi i am normal weight now, plus eating as type 2 .. any help would be very grateful ..thks

Hi @dvd whatever you ate was good for you as you clearly did not rise too far. However, your pre-prandial is a little elevated above non-diabetic levels (normally below 5.6) and it is likely to be this that is driving you into pre-diabetic ranges. Can you tell us what your fasting values are and what an average days food is like. What is your current waist measurement. Are you on any other medications - steroids/statins/... and do these have a contra-indication for raised blood sugar levels? Have you been tested for vitamin A,D,B12 deficiency.

May be you are just suffering from a fatty liver - if so a month on the newcastle diet may help clear it out. Many things to investigate and look into.

Hi..thanks for ur reply ..fasting was this morning (1st morning to take a fasting reading) 6.2 ... breakfast a glass of green veg drink, then scrambled egg, slice bacon, mushrooms with a cup of tea, lunch was a brown bread chicken sandwich and cup of tea, dinner was fillet of chicken with veg and half sweet potato, glass water, ..for supper i take a small bowl porridge skimmed milk .. waist measurement 36inches .. am on 1 statin and 1 bp tablet .. hope that covers it ..again many thks ..

Hi,

I suggest you keep a diary. And test before, and 2 hrs after, every meal.

Write down everything you eat. With the readings you get.
There are apps that can help with this, if you want.

After a week or two you will start noticing some very clear trends... Those are the things to focus on. Keep doing the things that give you good readings. Avoid/reduce/control the things that give high readings.

Sounds complicated, but it isn't.

It all becomes very simple when you realise that (for example) your late night porridge always sends you to bed with the highest reading of the day... ;)

have you checked the statin and blood pressure tablets for their side effects. I know at least one version has been linked to onset of diabetes. Please check your documentation/google. If it is indicated see your doctor and discuss getting another type. Out of interest what are your cholesterol values and were they taken prior to changing your diet to a lower carb one?

The statin that I was on - Pravostatin pushed my BG levels up to 7.2 after I'd managed to get them down from 6.8 at diagnosis to 5.4. I've now come off them and my levels are back in the 5s.

@dvd I have just re-read your reply and noticed you have a waist of 36 inches and a normal BMI. Given that I have a BMI of 27 and a waist of 32 inches I reckon you are carrying a lot of visceral fat. Maybe you could consider the newcastle diet for a month - it is a low calorie diet which allows your body to remove this visceral fat (in fact any low calorie diet would do this). This is precisely what I did on diagnosis and now have completely normal blood sugar levels.

Daphne - How long were you off the statin before your BGs came down? I was on a statin (Lipitor) for 10 years, then went off it in September, after my labs indicated I was pre-diabetic. I plan to have my A1C repeated next month.

I came off the statin after about 6 months however, due to the BS increase, I was also prescribed Sitagliptin which helped bring my hba1c back down to 40. I came off the Sitagliptin and have been diet only since last August and my last test in December was 42.
