Hello, I've just had a health check & been advised I have prediabetes as my test results were 42mmol.I can't get an appointment to discuss this with the nurse till 22July so thought I'd do some online research & have found that my result is from a new blood test that doesn't require fasting but I didn't know this before the test so had fasted for 8 hours, does this affect my result? The conversion chart says 42mmol is 7mmol on the old test but 7mmol on s fasting test puts me as diabetic not prediabetic

42 = 6%=av7 that isn't a fasting test number it's an average over the period, I would say you are pre-diabetic and need to diet and exercise so you don't become a full diabeteic

Hello Chris and welcome.

it looks like this was an HbA1c test. This is a test that averages your blood sugar levels over the previous 2 to 3 months and doesn't require fasting, but makes no difference whether you fast or not because it is a historical average and not a random test to show the level at the time of testing.

A result of 42mmol/mol is equivalent to 7mmol/L. This is an average of the last 2 to 3 months as I said, and is not a one off fasting test. It puts you just in the prediabetic range. Had it been 41mmol/mol you would have been non-diabetic. Hard luck on that one!

Hope this helps. Have you got a print out of your blood results? If not I suggest you ask for one.
