My son has pre-diabetess and for many years has shown high sugars on and off if not careful what he eats without becoming straightforward diabetic.
He has never been overweight and has always been active. There are several diabetics in the family both type 1 and type 2. Type 1 being quite severe. So - my son seems to defy all the
conditions for becoming type 2. After having type 1 for almost 50 years I thought I knew quite a lot about it but my son baffles me. What do you make of it.? :? M

Although there is a link between diabetes and overweight, It isn't clear what the causal effect is.
For example, I have a very obese friend whose doctor keeps telling her she should be diabetic, but she isn't.
I'm large, but not gigantic and I can probably count the number of take-aways I've eaten in my life on my fingers.
We read so much about diabetes nowadays which seems to be written just to give some people the opportunity to feel superior. If your son can keep his blood glucose in the non-diabetic rane,ie around 5 at all times, he might not develop overt diabetes

Hi.
As Hana says a proportion of people with type 2 are not overweight, and pre diabetes can be arrested before it becomes overt diabetes. There are many families that have both type 1 and type 2 members.
However (and it is only a very vague possibility because it is rare ) there is a type of diabetes that are genetic and can be misdiagnosed as eithe type 1 or type 2:MODY
This is the mot detailed information that I know of, from someone who herself has this form of diabetes.

She writes from an American perspective but if it is at all relevant to you, the best academic authorites on MODY are at Exeter University.
