My daughter frequently complains of feeling sick, thirsty and hungry. She is 12 years old. After a shopping trip yesterday, she kept saying she was really thirsty and hungry and then became very rude until after she had eaten. As my sister is a nurse, I thought I would borrow the glucose monitor and check my daughter. After fasting of 11 hours, her glucose level was 6. I would be grateful for opinions. many thanks.

Welcome to the diabetes forum. The reading of 6.1 mmol/L is only just a bit up from what are considered as non-diabetic levels and nowhere near as high to show that your daughter has diabetes or has yet reached the diabetic threshold, so I would suspect that her change in behaviour is most likely due to some other reason.
It is quite common in this cold damp weather to feel hungry and in need of further nurishment. I would suggest that you keep a close eye on your daughter and her behaviour over these next few day, as her change in behaviour might relate to dare I say it, female hormonal changes. or simply those rebelious teenage years, troubles at school or with a close friend, maybe even with a boyfriend. If you watch the situation for now the problems might simply all fade away simply by doing nothing.

Thank you Lazy Bones for your reply. My daughter s a very sensiable child and one that likes to stay in every evening and concentrate on her home work etc. She is not into boys at the moment (sure it wont be long). She also likes to compete in after school sports clubs etc. Her breath is also awful in the morning and I can tell just by walking past her that she has not brushed her teeth, however she does mouth breath at night and this may be the reason why. she also complained that after P.E she felt really unwell and had to take some time out. I think, I will monitor her levels for a couple of days. If they remain steady I will not panic. Thanks

Even if her BG levels aren't coming back very high, I'd still say it's worth taking her to the doctor to see if there's anything else that might be causing her problems. Even if it's nothing, at least you'll have some peace of mind :)
