It must be an anxious wait to find the outcome of your full blood test, but well done for taking the initiative to do something about it straight away.
You'll never find a consensus about what diet to follow, unfortunately, even among those who've had diabetes for a while. Many on this site, however, are having great success by limiting the amount of carbohydrates in the diet. Your doctor sounds about right when he suggested eating less fruit and more veg.
Essentially, you need to eat less of the foods which release sugar into the bloodstream and replace them with foods which don't - at least not as much.
Briefly, that means less bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and of course anything involving flour or sugar gets the heave-ho. It's a green light for meat, fish, most vegetables, eggs and dairy foods, nuts etc. Take a look at the Carbs threads if you have a chance, and please stick around.
