Hi all, a close friend of mine was recently diagnosed as diabetic after only having a few symptoms.
So having had a dry mouth ect i went to see my nurse and asked for a test.
My first test was 6.3 with a little hand held finger prick monitor. I had a fasting pin prick test today which was 6.1 and have to go for a blood test in 2 weeks.

My doctor said i really need to start watching what i eat ESPECIALLY since i'm trying to quit the fags toooo. Quiting MAY send me over the edge.
This is a very clear warning for you to change things around NOW.

I am 41 years old, 5ft nothing and weigh bleep bleep bleep - an extreme amount.
I have 4 children one of which has a severe learning disability and weighs in at 17st 7. He is 17yrs old and over 6ft tall. He eats for Britain and i'm also very worried about him becoming diabetic. It's like he's NEVER full and doesn't care what he eats. He doesn't understand between good and bad foods.
Over the years i have been a comfort eater and when i'd had a bad day i would sit and eat packets and packets of crisps and a bar of chocolate. When my son was younger this binge eating could happen every night.

So now i'm pre-diabetic and havn't a clue what to do about it. All the information i read just baffles me.
It's alright the doc saying watch what you eat but a little more info into whats good and not so good wouldn't go a miss.
He did say eat very little fruit and go more for the veg.

Could you lovely people on here give me some insight as to what i should and shouldn't be doing.
I've had the warning early and hopefully can stop myself becoming diabetic.
ANY advice and guidance will be very much appreciated.

Hi, you certainly have your hands full there havent you?!

Well our Dennis posted this link only today, I think it is ideal for you to start off, esp since you havent had the diabetes diagnosis yet http://www.diabetes-diet.org.uk/, just go as low carb as you possibly can, and yes fill up on vegetables.

I wish you and yours all the best

Hi Lynn,

It must be an anxious wait to find the outcome of your full blood test, but well done for taking the initiative to do something about it straight away.
You'll never find a consensus about what diet to follow, unfortunately, even among those who've had diabetes for a while. Many on this site, however, are having great success by limiting the amount of carbohydrates in the diet. Your doctor sounds about right when he suggested eating less fruit and more veg.
Essentially, you need to eat less of the foods which release sugar into the bloodstream and replace them with foods which don't - at least not as much.
Briefly, that means less bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and of course anything involving flour or sugar gets the heave-ho. It's a green light for meat, fish, most vegetables, eggs and dairy foods, nuts etc. Take a look at the Carbs threads if you have a chance, and please stick around.

All the best,

fergus

Thankyou very much Chocfish and Fergus for your replies.

I have checked the link you posted Chocfish and stuck it in my favourites - to read over slowly.lol. It's an awful lot of info to take in. :?

Well i have checked out the recipe section on here and we had the Salmon marinaded in soya ect for dinner with 3 small potatoes (instead of 4-6 large ones)and a big chopped salad. It was very nice.
My son Paul helped me with the salad and was very pleased with his work, lol. ( i was panicing incase he chopped his fingers)
Going to make peach ice cream later and maybe strawberry whip tomorrow instead of raspberrie whip.

I think i'm leaning more and more towards the low carb way of eating. Well it was the bloomin tones of carbs that made me go from 9.7 stone to xxxxxlarge lol.

i'll let you know how we get on.
Thanks Fergus for your bread recipe, (will make it when i track down all the ingredients) and your info about carbs ect.

THANKYOU
lynn

Hi Lynn, I just wanted to say that fergus is spot on with that advice. I followed this type of diet and went from 17.5 stone down to 12 , although it took me a year and a half , it has stayed off and I feel so much better about myself, there will be times when you may give in to temptation but dont give up as the end result will be worth it. Even if you are only losing 2lb a week it soon adds up. My best tip to give you is to stop bying the junk when you do your main shop , I found if I fancied something I really shouldnt be eating and it wasnt in the cupboard ,and I had to go to the shops to buy it, 9 times out of 10 I couldn't be bothered, or was too busy ,so I went without, Also fill that trolly high with fresh veg, fish etc and every now and then take a good look in it and if there are more than 2 or 3 unhealthy things in it , take them out and put them back on the shelves. It worked for me !

Hi Stabatha, thanks for the encouragement.

I very very rarely buy junk on a family shop BUT will send hubby down the shop on an evening to buy the junk. Keep telling him to say no but he still goes. I need to get my willpower under control, lol.

Last summer i did some work with a healer because i got to the point of giving up on life. It had been a battle for years trying to sort health and education out for the kids and so tired after years of difficulties with Paul.
I did really well. I lost 2 stone. We took the dogs for long walks in the forestry (in mountains in Wales)
But then my dad was taken into hospital Feb 08. Lots of traveling back and forth to Kent and on my last visit in March i took the phone call at 4am to say that he'd passed away.

Now i'm back to where i was before. 2 stone heavier and moods up and down and back to the binge eating.

But now with the pre-diabetic warning i've got to get my head back in gear and do something.
I'm determined to loose the weight and start a more active life again.

But thanks for your encouragement and i will step back and take a look in the trolley a few times while doing my next monthly shop.

Hi mumgonemad,

When I read your posts I see a very bright, very determined woman who, 12 months from now, will be much lighter, healthier and happier too. You will have stopped your pre-diabetes in it's tracks by eating better and be sharing your success with others who face the very same problems you once had.
You will do it.

All the best,

fergus

Hi Lynn
Fergus is absolutely right you know, you have more than proved what a strong woman you really are, the thing is that trying to lose weight/adjusting your eating habits is just so hard when you have so many other worries, eg your son's disability, etc so depriving yousrelf of the food that you really want to eat is yet another blow (I used to scream and shout 'what else have I got left, I dont have that many pleasures as it is, now I have to give up food as well') and I found ways of making sure that my husband would bring in the not-so-good food in, at least I could blame him then.

Try and focus on the health aspect, and reduce your carbs slowly, dont stop overnight to help you adjust and if you feel you are missing out, find other ways to treat yourself, just not food and if you slip one day or even two get yourself back on track the very next minute, dont even wait till tomorrow.
Follow the low carb eating plan, with loads of healthy veggies and I promise you will feel so much better after just one week you wont want to go back to the old eating habits anyway and you wont be hungry either.
I have managed to lose several stones doing low carb and believe you me if I can do it then anyone can do this.

All the best

Hi Lynn,
I am in a similar situation to you...My starving BG was 6.1 to 6.4. I had a GTT done but my 2 hr sample after the glucose came back as 6.6...so the Drs say I am not pre diabeteic. I know that it is not right to have a fasting BG of 6.3, so I have started a low carb diet, I don't eat carbs after 7pm I have virtually cut out bread, potatoes, pasta rice and reduced my fruit intake. My starving BG after 3 weeks is now between 4.4 and 5.1 !!! I have lost about 3lbs. I have bought a carb counter book from amazon and come onto the computer alot.
Look at the threads and take it all in I have learnt alot,.
Good Luck..... if you want a fellow buddy to do the diet with PM me

Thanks guy's and girls for all the encouragement and compliments.
Had a bad day food wise.
Daughter failed her theory test - so on way home we stopped for scones, cream and jam.
BUT BUT BUT pulled myself back in line and had 3 small boiled pot's with half plate of veg and backed/roasted bacon joint. (well not the entire bacon joint, lol. I did share some of it) Only i'm still craving sommit sweet - hopfully the peach ice cream we made last night will cure the craving.

Question. low carb is similar to atkins diet isn't it? i thought there was limited veg! I'm hopless in determining which foods have carbs, lol i thought veg was a carb.
DONT LAUGH,LOL

people are so nice friendly and helpful here. :D :D

the only veg you got to go easy on is potatoes, parsnip and sweetcorn, thats not to say you cant have any, I still have some but in very small portions, as for the sweet craving I found that sugar free jelly did the trick, not as tasty as the sugar laden ones, but it did the trick. You will find as you start to cut the sugar from your diet you will crave it less. When I was at my biggest I felt so awful and tired , suffered regularly from migraines and often felt depressed, I know you have had, and still have a lot of upset and worry to deal with but the diet really will help. all those sugars and carbs really do make you feel bloated and tired, I no longer suffer with the migraines which is a god send as i used to be bedbound in a dark room, sometimes for 3 days and i feel so much better. You lost the weight once and I know you can do it again, just do it slowly and dont look on it as being on a diet, diets fail , as when people reach their target weight they tend to go back to their old habbits in which the weight slowly creeps back on, but as a new way of eating for good that will lead to a healthier and happier new life, oh and give that hubby a kick in the shins if he keeps buying you the wrong things. If his legs hurt he may not be so eager to walk to the shop for you  anyway good luck and let us know how you get on
